I am about to get hired onto a captive agency and considering sticking around for a few years as a producer for both P&C and LIFE, how long do you think until I am solid enough to open my own agency?
I do have sales skills, and generally I feel that I need to sell life simply to supplement my first year income due to the higher commissions

Only you will be able to answer that question. It could be anywhere from 6 weeks to never. Maybe sooner, maybe longer.
