Hi, I came across this interactive forum a few days back but some how forgot the website and was cursing my luck until I got it back.

I wanted to ask some questions to the Insurance agents here who seem to be an experienced lot.

I would like to know, what are the steps to become insurance agent ?

What are the qualities and requirements one needs to possess in order to be eligible to become an agent?

Looking forward to your guidance.

Regards,
itirp

Good question! First you really need to decide what kind of iinsurance you would like to deal with. Life, Health, Auto, Home, Business etc. Once you know which line or lines you want to work with you can then get a better idea of the requirements that you will need. Tell me what state you live in and I can get you some more information.

In my state you are required to take 24 hours of class and then pass a state exam. You then need to find a company that will hire you and will back you parsay.

Or you can look for a company to work for that offers training and guidance through the process. I would recommend that. However you can do it on your own as well.

Tell me a little more as to what you are looking to do. Are you looking to sell insurance, service it, work in claims..then I can give you some more deatils and some companies to look into.

I think it's easy. Only if you can sell air - it's insurance contracts - you should just send you resume and reffenrences from previous job to several insurance companies and they will admit you =)

Nique had the right steps.

Are you going for your Life and/or health or P&C?

Are you wanting to be captive or independent?
What products do you want to offer?

Hi...the criteria to be an insurance agent necessitates you to pass the tests organized by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA). As per the guidelines set by this authority a prospective agent has to go through the training before siting for the qualifying test. Once you possess the certificate, only then would you be able to fulfill the terms of becoming a consultant or agent. Thanks for visiting the forums. We would be looking forward to more queries or discussions from your side. Regards, Fatman

Can someone share with me what I can expect in terms of expense and income I can generate if I decide to go with a company such as State Farm or Allstate and open my own agency? Is is better to become an independent agent vs. going with one of the large agencies? Your help is so appreciated.

Well, becoming an insurance agent is not that dificult for someone....

There are loads and loads of comapnies looking for insurance agents..They want more and more people who can get them more revnues..So getting a job as an insurance agent should not be that trouble some....
For a good insurance agent, you should be patient, hardworking and the most important thing is that the communication skills should be top class...
You can't even think of surviving in the field of insurance and marketing if you can't take talk with people comfortably.....
To convert your prospects into your customers, talk with them and provide them every piece of information of your company to them....All the schemes and policies of the firm you are working for should be at your finger tips...

If you want some more assistance, please tell me your location and I will try to help yo as much as I can

Becoming a life insurance agent is not an easy task at first. There are so many adjustments that you need. Adjustment in dealing with people, in managing your time and how to motivate your self to become more effective. But in the process of learning these thing, you will eventually gain more knowledge about insurance selling. They are right then they say that you need to be hardworking, patient and have a good communication skill. I will add up to that. You need to be persistent in everything that you do. If you have earned a good income in one client, you should be persistent enough to look for other clients. Don't wait until you have spent all your income and then you look for others. Persistence and consistency are needed in life insurance selling.

Joven222 is right.Persistency and consistency go side by side in this job. After successfully converting one prospect into your customer, do not wait to enjoy that income and start looking for who can be your potential customer.

And remember one thing....Never try to use same approach or methodolgy for every customer. It can work for one or two but it won't pay you back for more than that. Always be in contact with you fellow agents and discussing with them various strategies they use.

Nothing is more than experience gained in this business. So learn it and apply it to enjoy you job

Hi OTCHICK - you should interview with State Farm and All State to see what they have to say about expenses. Interview at as many places as you can think of and take your time. Recruiters will try to push you along but if you are qualified you are in the drivers seat and can start when you want. There are always lots of opportunities.

The income potential at State Farm, All State or as an independent is unlimited.

I prefer being independent but started as a captive to learn all that I can about products, the industry and insurance sales in general. THere is a lot to learn.

I hope that helps a bit
