I was selling life insurance on my own from my home office for about the past year. I am only able to do it part time and have thus broken even. I was thinking of getting a part-time job with an agency. My question is, do captive agents pay for there own leads or are they provided for them? What type of base salary do captive agents make? Can anyone help?

There are various factors which may influence your earning potential, such as

  • Total years of experience
  • Line of insurance
  • Average salary in the area
  • The contract drawn between the agency and you.

Thanks,

If we are discussing about the earning potential of a life agent then it'll also depend upon the type of policy the agent will sell, i.e. term life or whole life plans. Since term life plans are cheap and therefore easy to sell, an agent may make lesser commission on selling the life plan.

The whole life plan on the other hand is an expensive alternative, hence, more commission is rewarded to the salesperson for selling the whole life plans.

I understand about commission on life policies, remember I was doing this on my own. What I need to know is an idea of a base salary for someone who had been in the business for about a year and how leads are obtained when you are a captive agent

Different Companys do things differently, Bankers Life provides "Free" leads for their producers. I also believe pen life does this too.

Be careful however there are some GA's/ IMO's that are not good to do business with.

PM me and I can get more specific.

Thanks

Krett,

Back in the early 90s, I made the MDRT in 2 of my 4 years working as an agent of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. But I worked my butt off! You can look up the FYC requirements to get an idea of how much that is.

I've made considerably more working on my own but my case is rather unique. In order to avoid any potential conflict of interest, I seldom write insurance business any more. I would much rather farm it out to my friends or one of my agents. That keeps me out of the proverbial loop.
I write less than 10 policies each year and my goal is to make MDRT before May 1st, of each year.

Under most circumstances, I would much rather work for myself. I have the motivation, knowledge, and work-mentality to do a pretty good job. Some don't, however, and these are the people who are most successful in an agency environment.

I hope this helps,
Mark
