Is insurance difficult to sell if you have no experience?

Hello,

I am in the process of taking a pre-licensing course to prepare me for the state exam. I just wanted to know if selling insurance would be difficult to achieve if you have absolutely no experience but are in training? I have experience in retail (selling womens clothes; 3 years) and I will be getting my bachelors degree in Public Health; 2 classes left. Therefore; I wanted to know if I am making a wise decision before signing any contracts and regretting this later.
I have heard of individuals making good income with no background in selling insurance but everyone is different. I have a very outgoing personality and love to help people. Thank you.

I'm thinking the difficult part is finding the people to sell to. Personal lines policies are not very difficult but you still need to know what you are doing. I'm guessing if you sign a contract with someone that they will be there to assist you.

Hi Again,

What if you bought leads and have intersted prospects to sell to? Let's say you bought $200 lead package and get 30 leads. Out of those 30 leads, you close 4 sales. Is that realistic? Also, once you sell a policy, is it difficult to provide follow up services with the clents? Thanks.

I'm not an agent so I can't tell you for sure. What I have read is that bought leads are almost always garbage.

If we are talking about personal lines, its not difficult at all to maintain the policies. But I'm thinking you probably want to pursue those people for additional sales.

Define difficult. What you might find difficult, some might find a breeze. Sales has all sort of different applications so to broadly lump it in with all the other sorts of sales out there is likely incorrect and will give you false impressions.

P&C sales are dependent on volume. Providing you live in a state where things like car insurance are required, you'll have at least a situation where you can try to commoditize car insurance and give someone a comp quote.

You said you are looking at working for a specific company. Which one? Some are better than others. The big issue with P&C is that rates can vary by zip code, so it's tough to try and know who is the best in any given area for any given line of insurance.

I believe its difficult to sell any financial product without experience. Nothing comes for free!
You could prepare yourself for the challenges by studying more and discussing with fellow agents.

Not an agent here, either. Just a'Consumer'. But..from a Consumer's point of view,...if someone was trying to sell me something, and they didn't know much about the 'product' they were selling, I probably wouldn't want to buy it.

Thanks alot. The last two comments were very helpful to me; straight to the point and "completely" honest, from an agents point of view and a consumers. However, anything in life you do takes education, knowledge and dedication. Although I am new to this field, I am very analytical. I have to know all of the facts and details before jumping into something.

I guess I can say that's one of the requirements of an insurance producer right? Analytical. LOL.

Therefore, with that said; I'm assuming it does not matter what you chose to do in life, it all depends on if your willing to do what's necessary in order to be succesful at it. So, I have to ask myself,"Am I willing to aquire the skills that are necessary for me to become an insurance producer?" "Am I willing to take advantage of the educational tools that are provided to me and continnue ongoing education in relation to this field?" "Am I willing to encounter the challenges that are involved on a day to day basis with the limited knowledge I have?" The answer would be, why not? After all, isn't that how successful people become successful?

By the way, I did not mention a particular company in my previous post, I was just inquiring information about the level of difficulty for someone who is new to the insurance field. But I basically answered my own question, with the help of the last two posts.
