Life Insurance after Cancer

by mele133 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 10:45 pm

I am trying to get a life insurance policy for myself that has reasonable cost, but since I had cancer 14 YEARS ago, I keep getting turned down.
The funny thing is, most of the doctors I saw back then no longer even have any medical records for me since it was so long ago. I wanted a policy that would help cover expenses in case something happened to me as I know my children could not afford it right now while they are still in college.
Any advice on this would be appreciated.

*my health since then is normal stuff, no recurrence of any cancer!

What type of cancer? Most cancers shouldn't be a problem after 14 years....which companies have declined you already? The answer to that will be telling.

You are going about this the wrong way. Instead of putting in multiple applications with different companies, you need the help of an independent agent to help shop your history for the best offer so that you are only putting in one application.

Really? My records for a very minor heart condition exist from when I was a little kid, and that's well over 14 years ago, and at least one of the Doctors is no longer alive. I've not known it to be a regular practice to purge records for somone who is still alive just due to age, especially something serious like this.

Dgoldenz is correct though, after 14 years cancer free, you should be able to get coverage, and you seriously should be working with someone who can assess your situation and match you up with companies most likely to make a favorable offer.

I think after 14 years of dormancy there is a less chances of detection of cancer in your body, but it is dependent on basically type of cancer, there will be a physical examination of you will be performed by the insurance company to confirm that you are fit enough to have a insurance cover.

Which insurance companies have you applied a life insurance with? Dgoldenz is right. You should seek out the help of an independent agent. And maybe the fact that you don't have medical records is sort of bogus for the companies. I don't think medical records are ever really lost. Because if that's the case, you can just deny your cancer history!

What type of cancer?
Cancer survivors are typically placed in the most expensive (riskiest) tier of insurance coverage.

I have 'clients' that have had Cancer has pre-existing conditions. A few of them are tryin to get just Term Life right now. Most of tthat 'handful' are being turned down. (A comment to the above post)...even if the doctors no longer have your medical records, do YOU have your own copies? That's always a 'good' thing, if you do. ALWAYS keep copies of everything!!

Your "clients" are probably going about it the wrong way. They need an independent agent who can shop their medical history BEFORE completing an application to find out what they might be able to qualify for. They're shooting themselves in the foot if they are just picking a company to apply with on their own.

I see what you mean!! Good point!!!!!! A few ARE just 'thumbing through' companies to pick from. There are a few Independent Agents in their local areas. I'll make that suggestion to them. Thanks!!
