Quit smoking but chewing nicotine gum

I’m 61 years old and I quit smoking about 15 years ago. I eat a healthy diet and I don’t have any major health issues. Since I quit smoking I have been chewing on nicotine gum over the subsequent years. I want to buy a term life policy? Will the nicotine gum get me a lower rate than a regular smoker?

There are a lot of factors which will dictate your premium rate. To begin with, you USED to smoke. That little fact can make a difference even if you haven't smoked in over 15 years. Other than that, some carriers differentiate between smoking cigarettes and chewing on nicotine gums, you might get a better rate. Contact an agent or shop around yourself. I'm pretty sure you will find good rates.

Most insurance companies consider users of nicotine gum, patches, and other tobacco substitutes the same as actually using tobacco products. Expect a tobacco user rating. Add to that the fact that you are age 61, and your premium will be considerably higher than if you had applied for life insurance as a smoker 15 or 20 years ago.

There ARE a very few companies who do have different rates for gum users.

MOST insurance companies ask the if you have ever used any “nicotine replacement products” which includes nicotine gum of course. You'll be given a smokers rate.

Hi,
I think their won't be any reduction in the premium since you are a nicotine gum eater, they will be charged more since you were a smoker.

Insurance companies will rate as non-smoker anyone who has not used tobacco products or substitutes in the last 12 months. "Since you were" is overly broad.

With most insurers, tobacco user ratings will also be reduced to standard after the policy has been in effect 12 months or longer and upon the insured's written certification that they have not used tobacco products or substitutes in the last 12 months.

Many insurance providers require a medical exam before offering coverage. The best thing you can do is find a life insurance company that will offer you a more favorable rate as a nicotine gum user.

Persons who use nicotine substitutes, such as the gum or patch, on a regular basis are considered THE SAME as a tobacco user by most insurance companies. They have not lost the craving for the addictive nicotine, and an underwriter generally figures that if there is no gum available when the craving arises, the insured might go back to the cigarettes instead.

Until a person has been "nicotine-free" for at least 12 months, they will be classified as TOBACCO USE and pay a substandard premium.

Most life insurance applications ask: Have you used tobacco products in the past xx years?

This is a broader question than simply asking: Do you smoke cigarettes?

Blood and saliva testing can reveal the presence of NICOTINE -- the active substance in tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, pipe and chewing tobacco. It is also the active ingredient in the anti-smoking chewing gums. It all looks the same on a lab report, and will result in a tobacco-use rating.

Quit chewing gum and then approach the insurance providers for coverage. It is only after you become independent of nicotine, will the insurers oblige you with cheaper premiums.
