my x husben left me as his beneficiary on a life insurance policy and not his kids or mother. i recieved a letter saying if i sign off they will give me 5000.00 for doing so do i have to do sign it

This makes no sense. Please provide sufficient details to be able to provide advice for your situation. Who is "they" and what exactly did the letter say?

As Max has pointed out, more information would be nice.
But for now, based on what you've stated, the answer is probably no you do not have to sign.
