With most ADD policies, this will be listed as an exclusion and won't pay a claim.

This is also true in an accidental death benefit rider in a true life insurance policy. Assuming the policy has been in force for more than two years, the life insurance claim would be paid, but the accidental death benefit would not.

Death due to drug overdose by the insured may appear to be accidental, but it is not coverage by accidental death insurance plans.

Usually, an accidental death policy will apply several standard exclusions to the coverage, including suicide, self-inflicted injury, Taking of alcohol in combination with any drug, medication or sedative, Air travel as a pilot or crew member, Committing or attempting to commit any illegal activity, and Any active participation in a riot, insurrection or war, either declared or undeclared, among other exclusions.

Accidental death insurance policies also apply a standard requirement of death resulting from an accident that occurred within a set period of time. Meaning, the insured must die within 6 months (or some other time-frame) of the accident in order to be covered by the insurance policy.
