How can beneficiaries claim life insurance benefits?

My father has recently passed away. He left good amount of fortune behind for my mother and me but unfortunately we have no trace of them. Yes, we don’t have access to any of the papers as he used to live aloof and never disclosed anything while alive. I strongly believe that we were named in his life insurance policy and now we want to have the benefits. How can we get a trace of all his properties and how to file a claim as a beneficiary?

Any response would be appreciated!!

Funny, but if you can't find them, how would you know whether they existed or not?

It does not sound like you are in the US. If you are living somewhere else in the world, I cannot answer your question. You probably have no access to bank records that could be used to find the names of any insurance companies to which premiums were being paid.

I'm from Minnesota. Thanks for reply. I'll search for this bank/financial statements.

What I can say is that one should try to file the claim asap once the insuree is dead. This boosts the claim process and the chances of receiving the benefits stay higher. However, in your case (as Max said), you should find out the documents first.

the insuree

Perhaps this was a typo. We refer to the person who is covered by insurance as the INSURED, not the insuree.

Are you aware of any attorney who may have worked for your father? That may help you in finding the details and the documents to some extent. But, attorney or not, you need to find the papers first to file the claim.
