life partner on insurance policy

My mother recently passed. She named her life partner as spouse on one of her policies. They were never married and Illinois doesn't recognize common law marriage. What happens with that policy?

The benefits are paid to the named beneficiary, regardless of the relationship or marital status. Same sex, different sex, it makes no difference. Common law marriage, no marriage, same-sex marriage. The beneficiary is the beneficiary.

Illinois is not a community property state, so there are no other issues to interfere.

There is nothing to suggest this. On what do you base your comment? The OP said the "life partner" was named the beneficiary. If so, then no one has "taken" anything, the policy proceeds were left to the person to whom the owner apparently wanted the money to go. Happens all the time.
