Who should be contacting us about life insurance?

My father passed and he was remarried. My step mother has not mentioned the insurance policy. i know he had one but is not sure he left the money to us. I don;t want to make a big fuss about it. If he did not leave anything us anything is there anything we can do? Can you leave your spouse 100%? Who should be contacting us about this? All of his kids are over 25 years old. I live in Texas. He was at veteran and worked for the post office. He has step kids and lots of grandkids, from his wife.

Hi marisa, welcome on board. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

I, however , have deleted the other post that you've made on the same topic, since this one will fetch you more specific responses. Hope you'll soon hear from our revered forum members.

Hi Marisa, I too am sorry to hear about your loss.

However, if your father had decided to leave his policy benefits to his present wife and her children, it'd be wise to not to make fuss over it. The policy holder can award his policy benefits to anyone of his choice. And, if you have been named in any of his policies as beneficiary you may get contacted by the insurance company.

Be rest assured that if you were the named beneficiary, your step mother won't be able to collect from it under any circumstances.

Hi, IMO it may not hurt being little pro-active… I mean that you can contact the insurance company with which your father has the policies and check if they disclose the information to you.

Also try to get the copy of the insurance contract. It must have the name of the beneficiary mentioned in it.

Try to contact the insurance agent with whom your father has had the transactions. He might share the information with you.

However, if you are not the beneficiary in any of his policies, you might not receive any amount. It'd be wise to respect the wish of your father and let the designated beneficiary of the policy to receive the benefits.

Hope the information is useful.

Exactly.

AND I want to put a fine point on this.

If there are multiple beneficiaries NO beneficiary will be paid until all claim forms are submitted and in proper order to the insurance company.

I had one case with four (4) beneficairies all in different states and it took almost a year for the claim to be paid because one beneficairy kept moving and kept messing up the claim form.

So sorry to hear that you've lost your Daddy...

Can you leave your spouse 100%?

Certainly he can...

Who should be contacting us about this?

The carrier will IF you are beneficarys if not then there is no need to contact you.

You might ask step mom, ''How did Daddy have his policy set out? Were you the only beneficary or were there others?" it's a reasonable question if she says 'yes, just to me' or 'honey, I'm afraid that isn't any of your business' then give her a hug, and say ok....

I actually got a call from an insurance company (life) last week because my name was near the beneficaries. Only difference was the middle inital. I told them I was not that person. I am telling you this only because the ins. com. had no number to contact this person and was pulling names from the phone book. You may want to do as Lori suggests and find a way to "gently" ask your step-mother. Sorry for your loss. God Bless.
