my grandmother passed away a little over a year ago, but before she passed she asked me for my social security number address, bank and account number. She mentioned something about a life insurance policy and naming me as a beneficiary? Then someone my father (if thats what you want to call him) did something and signed it into his name and cashed it before i could get it... how do i go about finding out what happened and if i can sue my father?

You are saying that your sister was personally told by your father that he left the amount (death benefits/cash accumulation) of his life insurance to both of you, and he had instructed the insurer the same.

In that case, the possibilities are high that you and your sister are the beneficiaries of his life insurance.

You’ll have to notify your Dad’s insurance company about his death first. If you and your sister are really the beneficiaries of the policy then, you’ll be informed about it by the company itself.

What people say, and what people write (or not) are not always the same things. If "Dad" did not communicate his wishes in writing to the insurance company in the form of the beneficiary statement, there are no "high possibilities" other than Dad's creditors may see more of the $50,000 than his children.

The "mr/ms" mentioned could have been the agent, and we all know that agents don't get it right 100% of the time.

I have found out about 3 he had I think there is 2 or 3 more. is there anyway I can find out. I don't plan on trying to collect I just want to know how much she is hiding and lying

Well penny, if you were not mentioned as the beneficiary in your brother’s policies and if your sister was not taken off the same by following insurance company procedures, then I don’t think benefits will be paid to you.

You may challenge the situation though, with the help of a lawyer and support your cause with the signed statement.

If you just want to find out the number of policies he had, you may contact the insurance companies with whom your brother had other insurances with, or get the help of companies providing policy locator service. You might go through his bank statements if you have access to it, to find out where all the premium money went to.

This has no value unless he filed the change of beneficiary form for each policy/insurance company involved.

If this statement is true, what exactly is the point of all this? You already know your sister is a liar, what difference.will this additional knowledge confer?

My mother in law passed just recently and some say there was a life insurance policy left behind for my husband (only child) and some just don't know. How do I go about finding out if this is in fact true??

You can do several things. First, you can look at recent bank statement to see if an insurance company was taking premium payments from her account. Or, you can use the Medical Information Bureau's "Lost Policy Finder" service ($75 fee to run a check).

The MIB service does not guarantee to locate any policies, and if they even provide information that a policy was once applied for, it cannot tell you if that policy was still in force. For that, you would have to contact any insurance company they report to you.

There are several ways of locating a lost life insurance policy, as discussed in several threads.

1. Check for the bank and credit card statements to know about the insurance companies, to which premium payments were made.

2. Check with the auto, health or home insurance companies, as the life insurance policy could've been taken out through them.

3. Contact the deceased's lawyer, attorney, financial advisor.

4. Avail the Policy Locator Service from MIB or other private companies for a charge.

I think this is a fair question.

As the mother of 4 children myself I would want them taken care of. I carry a policy with amounts specific to each of my children. It is my wish that they be cared for once I am gone. If I were alive, I'd help whenever necessary... If I'm deceased I would want to at least give my children that safety net.

If a parent is gone, their care is gone also. I miss my father but, he had no policy and I'll never be able to ask him for advice, help, or a hug again. I'd hate to leave my children missing me. It seems this is a simple comfort. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to find out if the father who was a comfort in to his children also desired to be a comfort after he was gone.

I hope you find out... And I don't think it makes a person heartless to ask questions... Seems awfully judgmental.

An insurance policy on your life would only pay a benefit if you died, not your mother. If your mother had life insurance on herself, you might possibly be a beneficiary.
