How do I know if I was left a life insurance policy?

by rosenberg2734 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 02:58 pm

Hello my name is Vicki Rosenberg, my father passed last year, in September of 07. He left behind a wife, 4 children and 6 grandchildren. My father was a man that paid all his bills on time, and very hard working. I know my father had a life insurance policy for all his children, because he told me when I was 17, I am now 38. When my father pass my mother and older brother, which he is by another father, but father took him in when he was 4 so he is consider my father's son, anyway they had let us know there was no life policy left for no one, he stop paying on a life policy 6 months okay. My mother stated there were only 30,000 left for her. Everyday I sit in disbelief, my father knows how I struggle as a single parent with four children, and my daughter was his pride and joy. My parents did not even sleep in the same rooms, my mother left my father when I was 15 and return to him when I was 21, since then they sleep in separate rooms in the house and would say hi and bye to each other. My oldest brother took all his paperwork from his desk in his room where my father faithfully sat doing his bills. Sorry for the whole story, but how would I ever find out if something was done, by my mother and older brother to not allow there family to have a life policy, or how would I find out if there was ever one?

Hmmmmm, I can't seem to formulate a concise response so I'll go sentence by sentence on the main points of this post.

I know my father had a life insurance policy for all his children, because he told me when I was 17, I am now 38.

Yes, he probably did with did being the operative word. But you more likely than not misunderstood what he meant. He probably did have life insurance on all four of his children when they were younger with the children as the INSURED and himself as the BENEFICIARY to pay final expenses if something happened to one of the children. Child Riders are common on the parent's policy.

It would be rather odd for someone to buy four (4) separate life insurance policies just because they had four children when they could simply name all the children as beneficiary on one (1) policy.

anyway they had let us know there was no life policy left for no one, he stop paying on a life policy 6 months okay.

That's probably true.
He probably took whatever money he had in his old policy and used it for himself. Happens all the time.

My mother stated there were only 30,000 left for her.

That's probably all he had.
Why would Mom lie to you?

Everyday I sit in disbelief, my father knows how I struggle as a single parent with four children, and my daughter was his pride and joy.

Disbelief about what?
That your Dad died?
That you have four children?
That the money went to your Mom?

Certainly you don't mean to say you are in disbelief because since you had four children and are struggling that your Dad should have had a nice BIG fat life insurance policy paid for with his money out of his pocket so when he dies his daughter with the four children who is struggling will be financially set for life, can buy a new big house and send all of her children to college with money left over to pay for the wedding and a down payment for each of their first homes?

I'm perplexed as to what you mean.
There is the fact Mom and three other children also lost their Husband/Dad.

Sorry for the whole story, but how would I ever find out if something was done, by my mother and older brother to not allow there family to have a life policy, or how would I find out if there was ever one?

What would they have done with it?

A life insurance policy is PRIVATE contract between the owner of the policy and the insurance company. If you and others would have been listed as a beneficiary no payments would be made to anyone without ALL claim forms submitted and in proper order before the insurance company would pay any claims to anyone.

That's ok, GARY...we forgive you!!LOL Not an expert, of course, but...I would think if Dad had any insurance money, that would be given to the daughter, the daughter would be informed someway. I think, too, what gets me ('pet peeve', I guess) the father dies and the daughter is upset because she received NOTHING from his insurance?! Umm.........don't 'get me started' on this one. She should miss her father ( as a human being..) NOT his money.

well color me and my family odd i guess...my grandpa took out policys on my sister and i (still in force) my dad did on my children, we did on our children (all still in force) and we did on our grandkids, now on our grandbabies, they are paid up till the kids are i think 27 at which time, the kids pay a premium, convert them etc.... or just let them 'die' (pune intended)...

However I do agree with the rest of your post...OP I'm not clear if you are concerned that you thought you have your own life policy (for when you die) or that dad didn't leave you anything....of course mom is his next of kin, then the FOUR children, not ONE of the FOUR...please explain better what your concern is ...

That's ALOT of money, i would think, to start all of those Life Insurance policies. But,,,,,,,,of course, I don't know what kind they are or what the payments are for each. I know people that have started 3 different ones for their 3 kids. However......on the other hand, started 1 policy and divided the policy into however many 'loved ones' they have.

Kinda of upsets me when I see posts like this one. It seems more and more that kids (and sometimes others) are really more disappointed that someone did not leave them money. They should be more disappointed in the loved ones death. Its not mom and dads responsibility if someone has 4 children they can not take care of. I think death really shows us peoples true colors. I went through this once when my first husband died and I can tell you I weeded out alot of so-called caring people.

I know my parents DO have a Life Insurance policy, Estate, etc. Gosh....................it would VERY handle or me to handle it, when they pass away. I see alot families 'seperated' because of money. It's sad to see.

Well, my problem is that we lost the paperwork for my mother's insurance (she died a few years ago and my father wanted to save the money for us "kids" to use as we want...) Anyway, we can't find the policy now, the company she worked for got sold, and I'm at a dead end on how to pursue this. Any suggestions??
