How do I know if I was left a life insurance policy?

Hello my name is Vicki Rosenberg, my father passed last year, in September of 07. He left behind a wife, 4 children and 6 grandchildren. My father was a man that paid all his bills on time, and very hard working. I know my father had a life insurance policy for all his children, because he told me when I was 17, I am now 38. When my father pass my mother and older brother, which he is by another father, but father took him in when he was 4 so he is consider my father's son, anyway they had let us know there was no life policy left for no one, he stop paying on a life policy 6 months okay. My mother stated there were only 30,000 left for her. Everyday I sit in disbelief, my father knows how I struggle as a single parent with four children, and my daughter was his pride and joy. My parents did not even sleep in the same rooms, my mother left my father when I was 15 and return to him when I was 21, since then they sleep in separate rooms in the house and would say hi and bye to each other. My oldest brother took all his paperwork from his desk in his room where my father faithfully sat doing his bills. Sorry for the whole story, but how would I ever find out if something was done, by my mother and older brother to not allow there family to have a life policy, or how would I find out if there was ever one?

I'm confused about what you are trying to find. Is it cash generated from a life insurance policy on your mother, or proceeds from a life insurance policy on your father? If there was a policy, you could use the Medical Information Bureau to look up a policy. But if it's money in an account, you'd have to look through/for the account(s).

If there really was an insurance for you, or for all children, then there's nothing your mother and older brother can do to take that away from you. I see no reason why you should doubt them in this matter. And I see why you are so upset. You have four kids and barely making ends meet. Stop sitting in disbelief over the insurance you thought you had to save your life. And don't ever blame your father if your life is messed up right now. Maybe he meant company insurance or something. After all, that was so many years ago.

my grandmother passed away a little over a year ago, but before she passed she asked me for my social security number address, bank and account number. She mentioned something about a life insurance policy and naming me as a beneficiary? Then someone my father (if thats what you want to call him) did something and signed it into his name and cashed it before i could get it... how do i go about finding out what happened and if i can sue my father?

You are saying that your sister was personally told by your father that he left the amount (death benefits/cash accumulation) of his life insurance to both of you, and he had instructed the insurer the same.
In that case, the possibilities are high that you and your sister are the beneficiaries of his life insurance.

You’ll have to notify your Dad’s insurance company about his death first. If you and your sister are really the beneficiaries of the policy then, you’ll be informed about it by the company itself.

What people say, and what people write (or not) are not always the same things. If "Dad" did not communicate his wishes in writing to the insurance company in the form of the beneficiary statement, there are no "high possibilities" other than Dad's creditors may see more of the $50,000 than his children.

The "mr/ms" mentioned could have been the agent, and we all know that agents don't get it right 100% of the time.

my brother told me he had several life insurance policies he wanted my sister off as benificiary and me on . he recently moved in with me out of my sisters because she wasn't using his money for him or buying what he NEEDED he signed a statement saying I was to be benificiary. but my sister wouldn't tell anything about insurance. since his death she says there was no insurance . I have found out about 3 he had I think there is 2 or 3 more. is there anyway I can find out. I don't plan on trying to collect I just want to know how much she is hiding and lying

Well penny, if you were not mentioned as the beneficiary in your brother’s policies and if your sister was not taken off the same by following insurance company procedures, then I don’t think benefits will be paid to you.

You may challenge the situation though, with the help of a lawyer and support your cause with the signed statement.

If you just want to find out the number of policies he had, you may contact the insurance companies with whom your brother had other insurances with, or get the help of companies providing policy locator service. You might go through his bank statements if you have access to it, to find out where all the premium money went to.
