I'm convinced that people just make up answers on this board. How is the insurance company going to pay all of the heirs? It won't have any clue as to the indentity of these people. It will typically get paid to the estate. When this happens, hopefully there will be a Will that will determine where the money goes. Otherwise, it will be up to the state. |

Hello Eddie,
I have a strange feeling that you are confusing what I am asking. Yes, every insurance company has a database of their policies. However there is no central database in the United States or anywhere else in the world where you can go to for help. There is no central database that connects all the life insurance companies together because of the privacy issues. If I give you my full name and social security number, the only way that you can find out if I have life insurance or not is to call everyone of the insurance companies in the United States and ask them. (last count there where well over 500 of them.) I am an insurance agent, and I know with certainty that there is no such database. This is the reason that I started FindYourPolicy.com. It is a central database where you list low risk information(the company name where you have life insurance at).
If there was a central database, then it would be known by every agent and agency out there. During my research to start our company, I made many enquiries into the government and they also said that there is no central database. The closest you have is the MIB and they have a success rate of only 28%.

If her husband took out a policy on her and he and/or thier children are the beneficiaries, you will not recieve anything, so it would be pointless in searching for it.
And i thought the beneficiary would be notified by the insurance companies when they (the insurance companies) are notified of the death of the insured. _________________ Protect your family and assests with quality term life insurance. |

While you wait for Michael's follow-up and in the interest of helping others, could you tell us what country you are talking about. USA or Canada or ?
It would help us all. By the way, many of the people who have responded to this question are agents in USA and have not heard of this "data base". AARP. the US government, and top executives of insurance companies have never hear of this datat base. Check MIB and they never heard of it. So what country are you talking about? You would be helping a lot of people with specifics. Looking forward to hearing from you. Maybe you could get your friend and agent to respond so us other agents can help clients. I haven't taken the time to read every single post in this thread and I apologize if this point has already been covered.
| Quote: | | Mom passed away recently and her husband may have a life insurance policy on her that we are not aware of. |
First of all, "her husband" makes him sound so alien. Wasn't he the one who stood on an alter somewhere and promised to love, honour, etc, etc? Maybe his having life insurance on her was fine with mom.
I have 2 stepdaughters and I'm certain they are not aware of any policy(ies) I have on their mom. She gave me permission and we make the premium payments together. Quite frankly, it's none of their business. My wife has life insurance on me and I could care less if my kids (her stepchildren) know about it. If they decide to step up and make the premium payments, we'll talk about it in greater detail.
When people get married, they share things, make arrangements, and promises to each other they'll take to the grave. If one of the kids disagrees - so what?
I assume the OP is a stepchild and apparently doesn't like the idea of someone taking out life insurance on her mom. _________________ Please feel free to go to my website at www.markcolbert.com or, if you have a specific question, you can email me directly. You can visit the Medical Information Bureau website, www.mib.com, and pay a fee for a policy search. While they cannot tell you if a policy is in force, they may be able to point you in the direction of a company (or more than one) that possibly has/had a policy in force.
Condolences for your loss. Your mother was too young to have passed. _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197. I answered this in your other post on the same subject. But here goes again . . .
If your mother was once a municipal employee, any life insurance that covered her through the city or a labor union was probably a GROUP term life policy, primarily due to its lower cost. If your mother was covered as a retiree, it is indeed possible that the policy could have a termination age of 85 -- that's not an uncommon age in such policies.
There is no "main database" in which life insurance data is collected, although the Medical Information Bureau does maintain some limited information about applications for INDIVIDUAL life insurance policies. If your mother was, or once was, covered by an individual life insurance policy, they may have some information that could point you in the right direction. There is a $75 fee for their "Policy Locator Service," and they claim about a 30% success rate. www.mib.com
You could try speaking to any of your mother's former coworkers, if you know of any, who might be able to tell you about the coverage that was made available to city workers. Also check with the labor union she was a member of (if there was one). _________________ CA-licensed Life & Disability Analyst. CA Insurance Lic #0596197. There's a National Insurance Registry for this to check if the person you are looking for was a member, you will find everything there that you need. |
