Look through bank records, checkbooks, personal papers first. Normally you'll find information relating to payments made to life insurance companies somewhere. That's all you need to get started- the name of the company. Depending on when he bought it, the name of the insurance company could have changed or may have been purchased by another insurer. If you can find a name, we can help you.
If that's no good and you can't find any information, you can always try a place called the "Medical Information Bureau" or MIB. They have a service that helps locate policies for these kind of things. The have millions of records of life insurance policies, but only if it was purchased in the last 14 years. It costs $75 and you have to meet certain qualifications in order to get the report, but it's completely legitimate and possibly worth the effort.
