Lost insurance policies - Can we locate them?

I never knew my father. I recently tried to locate him and was informed that he has passed away. He was court ordered to have a life insurance policy for me and I am wandering how to locate lost insurance policies !!!

Well, start with whomever he was close to when he died...wife, parents, siblings, other children maybe? Did he pay child support? I would assume he was court ordered to do that as well...If so that should give you the county and state he was in...then you can contact the Probate court of that county and see if his estate was probated...How long ago did he pass away? And in what state? I'm not sure of the statute of limitations on these types of things...If you have reason to believe he left a substantial estate it would certainly be worth your while to get an attorney involved...many people have actually found such lost insurance policies in the past!

I'm very sorry that your Daddy passed away before you could begin a relationship with him...I hope there are family members of his that can help to fill that gap and help you 'know' your Daddy in some way.

Hi crystal, Do you know your father's attorney? I think contacting him may solve the problem for you. Lori is right, you can also contact the county court to find out the status of his estate. Also check out if he had an executor for his property or not. The executor is the person appointed to execute the terms and conditions of the will. This way it's easier to find lost insurance policies these days.

Contacting the state's insurance department and the other administrative offices may help. Further, you may contact the financial adviser of your father if you know him. It would make the search easier for you.

There are some private offices that would help you locate lost insurance policies that can't be traced easily. You can check out with them as well.

BTW, how do you come to know that he has left you with a life insurance policy?

Court ordered for how long is the question. Often times it's for minor children only, but if you are still a minor, I would start with the court that ordered it. It's very important that we find those lost insurance policies which might save us under any economic downturn.

My condolences, my wife just lost her father who had been in and out of her life. It wasn't easy on her.

If you can get access to your father's check book or bank records, you may be able to find out whether or not he had a policy.

Insurance policies are usually paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. If you can review the last year or so of debits to his checking account, you may be able to determine whether or not he had an active life insurance policy. Chances are, if he hasn't paid a life insurance company in the last 12 or 13 months before he passed, he probably lapsed the policy.

Probably, but not necessarily. Sometimes people pay by credit card, with cash or with a money order. Occasionally people buy single payment life insurance policies. Sometimes they will buy universal life or endowment insurance that doesn't need to be paid every year. Also cash value policies have non-forfeiture clauses that can keep them in force long after the last premium was paid.

There is no government agency or public record that will tell you anything about your father's life insurance policies. You may get information on lost insurance policies from his records. Hopefully the people who would have access to those records will be do the right thing.

Hi there..

I do empathize with you..& I'd have every reason to feel that people who were closely associated with your father could be of some help to you.
Why don't you check out with the same source about where he had been working last. Many times, I've come across such circumstances wherein the official records helped to locate lost insurance policies with the ex-employees as well as their beneficiaries :)
Wish everything works well with you!

I'm trying to help a 82 year old man who has been a victim of ID theft. The suspects have his SS#. Is there a way that he can make sure that a life insurance policy was not issued on his life with death benefits?

I don't think that there is any way to determine whether or not a policy was issued in his name.

They would have to get a death certificate to file the claim. You may want to see if there is a way to limit or at least keep track of who is able to get a death certificate in the event that he passes away.

MIB.COM may help!!
Prove to them that you are entitled to the information, show them a copy of the death certificate along with a check for $70 and they'll tell you all about such lost insurance policies written on your dad (within a certain time frame).

One good way is to contact the attorney and ask him/her about lost insurance policies like that. Asking someone who is related to your father can be of great help.
