The insurance division will be of no help. The OP needs to go to MIB.com and click on the consumers section. It will then show an area that allows the consumer to check on life insurance policies. They have more than 170 million records on purchased life insurance policies. It will cost a few bucks to research the info, but it's the only decent place to go.

FRANCES, Why there wasn't any effort to locate the policy after your father's death? Then your mother could have been the source of information.

Anyway, the following are the methods to search for a life insurance policy:

  • Documents and other important papers of the deceased.
  • Bank statement or the tax return of the last two years if the policies weren't paid up.
  • Contact the employer of the deceased or inquire with his friends and family.
  • Contact the insurance agent who had sold them policies. You may also contact the insurer with which your parents had auto and/or home insurance with.

Let us know how things went.

Thanks,
Rupert

The state dept of insurance can do nothing to assist the OP other than maybe tell her about MIB...period...state ins depts regulate the insurance industry...not locate policy information.

Rupert gave good advise as well if there is a policy there should be something in mom and dad's paper work around the house...start digging, and also MIB per teacher...

Hi Frances..

My father died several years ago and my mother passed away last week.

Didn't you and your mom inquire about your Dad's policy for all these years?
Did you ever had a word with your mom regarding this?

Well, I have the following discussion for you-

See, if you'd like to go through it and please don't forget to reply to my queries..

Hey Frances, was he a veteran? I was shocked to find out my father had a military life insurance. It sat there since 1970's. No one ever told me there was one!
You never know. Call veterans affairs and check. Have his ss# and birthdate ready. Its worth a shot and looking into. Reason I am mentioning this. I am running into alot of people lately who have had fathers that had these from that generation. In those days it was very affordable to pay on life insurance. Hope you track it down! cyndi

Hi mightyoak,

Call veterans affairs and check.

Did you call up the vet. affairs to know about this military policy? Did they provide you with the details of the policy?

Yup I called veterans affairs. Call the toll free number. The lady said there was a policy and she was sending the info out to the beneficiary. She would NOT tell me the amount tho. I waited, nothing came. So I called back about a month later to check.
The next time I called VA, I got someone else on the phone. He told me the amount, who was the beneficiary, and I almost fainted. Now remember these are big places. One hand doesnt know what the other is doing. So one person At the VA wont tell me, the other person I get, blurts it out.
I knew something was fishy because (theives) called the funeral home for my fathers death certificates before his body was even cold.
So you just play dumb and keep at it. You cant be shy. Playing dumb goes a long way.
You may not get told the $$$ value, but they will tell you if one exists. I think the actual policy file number I got when I contested it. But I had no info what so ever, and not a scrid or a clue there was ever even a policy, in my fathers house. ANYWHERE. Not even an envelope from Veterans affairs.
If there is no evidence anywhere sometimes its fishy.
You need the name, ss# and birthdate.
I suppose anyone could call and check. cyndi

Mighty, I think she was right in doing so. The insurance companies aren't suppose to let out the information regarding the policy (death benefit and beneficiary name)of the deceased to anyone apart from the beneficiary. I dunno though if the military affair department would act differently.

Have you had to tell them that you are suspecting some foul play with the policy to get the information?

Hi Mightyoak,

Are you sure that the call landed up at the same dept. twice? Did you call the same toll free number?

If so, then it surely has to be a thing of concern for all of us. If a body like the Vet. affairs has such malpractices within then everyone needs to be aware of it.

He told me the amount, who was the beneficiary, and I almost fainted.

Did they verify your identity?
