Can you get in touch with your father-in-law's attorney? I think it will become an easier task to locate his policy if you know the attorney. Do you have any access to your dad-in-law's and mom-in-law's important documents? If yes, then you may check there. Maybe getting in touch with the state's insurance department and other administrative office can help you.

Hi tessa.mathis

Do you know where your father-in-law kept his bank check books? If you can get access to any of his important documents, maybe you can find out if he had a policy or not. Whether he had an active life insurance policy or not can be determined by reviewing the debts to his checking account in the lat year. I do not think any of the government agencies or public records can help you with the life insurance policy your father-in-law had.

Hope I could help :)

You may have to spend some time going through all their records in their home. I know it probaly won't be an easy task but one you and others could do together.

I am very sorry for your loss. You might want to check with the auto insurance that they were with. Sometimes Auto Insurance companies like Allstate or State Farm will call their auto clients and sell them Life Insurance.
Also, FindYourPolicy.com is growing and they may have registered their Life Policies with them. You might want to check their database.

If you are not sure, whether or not the policy was through his employer, you may contact his employer's office for the information. His last two years income tax return can also be a great source of information.

However, it would be easy to know about things if your father in-law has a will. Do you know whether or not he had a will in place?
