HI Murph

I have successfully placed life insurance on a few cancer survivors. All of them were past 5 years. The two most recent were Hodgkins and Skin Cancer. I can't recall testicular cancer.

I forget if you are a broker. IF so, you need to contact underwriters just to discuss in general and see how they would treat it if an application was submitted.

If you are not a broker you need to find one in your area. First you should get a full documentation of your health history. IT will be especially important to have full details of your date of diagnosis, details of treatment and how long it has been in remission for. Then go to a broker who can contact insurers on a "trial" basis (so a decline is less likely).

Hope that helps!

Life insurance is certainly an available option for a cancer patient if he/she is no longer under treatment.

Ontario Broker is right, the patient, who has survived passed five years or more is eligible to get insurance and can also get good rates on premium. However, it'll depend upon the company's business and underwriting policies.

Well, the problem a cancer survivor may face that many insurance company will not agree to insure a customer with a serious pre-existing condition.

Based on the statistics available on the cancer patient's survivals, more and more life insurance companies are now showing interests in insuring customers with serious health hazards.

Cancer is considered as an ‘impaired risk', like drug or alcohol abuses, which implies that the applicant may face problem in accruing proper coverage. However, the hardship is dissolving very fast and many insurers are now finding ways in insuring people with terminal illnesses.

Murph, you should ask the person to look for insurers, who have specialized in insuring cancer and other ‘impaired risks'.

Just to reply to a couple of comments made:

Joven - that's not quite right. The insurers will look at someone who is "fully recovered" from a life threatening illness. And it depends on the condition.

This is where a broker is important. Submitting to the right company is important. A decline could lead to everyone declining any application.
