Start with her attorney and bank (safety deposit box). I'd then check with her former auto and/or home insurance agent. Many agents reference life policies held with other companies.

You can talk with her insurance agent or attorney. Talk to other family members to find out if they know anything about this matter. In addition you can talk with her closest friends. I'm sure you will find some useful information

Moond, you should definitely begin with the path described by the other two members. Also, I'd suggest you to read the following old discussion. It may help you to get more ideas about locating the plan.

Ask your closest family members. They might have known about your mother's policy. You can also check on the nearest life insurance company in your area. Or you can also try to find other financial documents. It might give you an idea about the insurance policy.

Hello Sabrena, I am afraid that you are incorrect. Due to the Privacy Act the insurance companies will never give this information out. This is a link to the NAIC website, http://www.naic.org/documents/consumer_alert_locate_lost_life_insurance_benefit.htm
The only way to prevent unknown or unclaimed life insurance is to list all sold policies on a central life insurance database such as FindYourPolicy

The most comprehensive reliable source for missing policies is from the the MIB (medical information bureau). All insurance companies in US and Canada who have had life applications submitted since 1996 have reported the information to the MIB. You can request a policy finder inquiry for a small fee and receive a report of all policies applied for since 1996. They can be accessed at www.mib.com

Contact the Medical Information Bureau. The MIB's Policy Locator Service can conduct a search of the companies to which your relative applied for life insurance.
