Thanks Lori for highlighting this issue, over the last couple of months chattering and off topic discussion has increased over the board. Well, I'm not saying that we should stop this entirely because it'll also restrict the participation of people who are not insurance professionals, but we should definitely take the steps to curtail it as much as possible.

Dear all,

I have gone through all of your invaluable comments regarding the recent proceedings at AmPm-Marathon-

Let's do our best to try hard to stay on topic in the future.

I would sincerely urge everyone to adhere to the forum guidelines.

I personally think the winner of the monthly Marathon should be judged by the membership. At present, the only requirement to win is the number of posts, but maybe it should be the number of "quality", "informative" posts.

This is a great suggestion I must say. I have been receiving emails and private messages conveying the views of our valued members regarding the "quality" of forum posts that are being considered for AmPm-Marathon.

A review of the last month's forum-postings have finally proven that a considerable number of posts are not meeting our compliance guidelines and are not up to our quality standards as well.

I have consulted with our panel of experts and conveyed our views in order to give them an opportunity to develop a concrete support-system that establishes transparency of our judgment.

Regards,

Lakemen

Aaaaaahhhhhhh, the world of wasted and wanton babble. Which usually serves no apparent purpose, and tends to infuriate that segment of the population that actually has a clue. LORI...we've had this conversation before- sound familiar??? Idea Many forum members have had regular discourse regarding thoughts like "why is this person even allowed a COMPUTER, much less giving them the ability to get online???"

Since we're in the Pub, and almost all is allowed, let me vent some more...

Contributors NEED TO KNOW where they have knowledge and WHERE THEY NEED TO STAY OUT OF THINGS!! I find myself going crazy at times reading posts fraught with misinformation and/or limited views on a particular subject, and this oftentimes results in BAD INFORMATION!! Bad information = bad decisions in the short and long runs, and ultimately to a loss of credibility.

We need to make sure that the information we provide is accurate, timely and verifiable. There are too many possibilities to lead a person astray which could easily cause untold problems for that person down the road.

As far as "staying within the topic" is concerned...that drives me CRAZY!! When an OP hits us up with their question, I have an idea Exclamation that might actually work. How about actually answering the question directly??! Idea Granted, many posts do not give enough information in which we can answer fully and correctly, so ASK THE OP FOR THE ADDITIONAL INFO...hmmmmm?

Don't GUESS, don't PREDICT, and don't ramble on within areas you don't know anything about or worse still (as I've seen more than once) GIVE THEM BAAAAAAD INFO! Remember the credibility thing???

Insurance Maze asked me to respond to this thread, and I'm not sure if what I posted has any bearing whatsoever on his concerns...but remember- it's the PUB and I am under no restrictions! (well, kind of, and Lakemen will let me know if I'm off-base on this, I'm sure lol)

In closing, I'm almost embarrassed to have the Chicago Cubs logo as my avatar. Notice that I said "almost embarrassed." Not completely, though. Another couple of years of this, I'll stroke out and won't have to worry about those *&(%*(#@)! Cubbies anymore! I guess that there's a silver lining to everything if you look hard enough!

It would be wonderful if those in the industry would be more open to explaining and teaching those on the forum a little more about insurance. I challenge you experts to come up with something in the forum to spread your knowledge in a teaching role.

Then maybe we could have a contest on "Who I learned the most from this month?" How about it, any takers?

That sounds like a great idea. There are those who do already take the time to explain and help us understand. One person in particular is Lori. I wish more of the experts here would be more open to explaining ang guiding members who do not work in the insurance field.

Absolutely agreed with your comment about Lori. She's my hero Very Happy She knows from where she speaks, freely admits when she DOESN'T know something, and is one of those rare people that (my dad always said this was really important to take to heart) "knows what they don't know."

I run an insurance and securities educational institute. I help industry professionals and laypersons daily, and I am no longer astounded by the lack of knowledge out there on the insurance game. This business is complicated as all get-out, takes years to become accomplished, and I am not personally familiar with ANYONE that "knows it all." I too will easily admit when I don't know about something, and commonly challenge the community to chime in with their comments. We have some extremely knowledgeable members who contribute greatly to the knowledge base here, and I especially applaud Lori, Insurance Maze, Gary Spicuzza (spelling?) goodnatured, fireyone and a host of others who share their knowledge. This is important information, and usually put aside as unimportant by the general public. Until, of course, they have a problem.

Yo Lakemen...there's got to be a way to help out new posters when they need help. All of the SMEs (subject matter experts) feel the same way I about trying to answer a post when you have nowhere near the necessary info. So, members- what can we do as a community to help the newbies give us accurate info? Comments???? QuestionQuestion

SEO is important...need to "get Googled" Not bad right now, but use terms that help search engines find us. Lot's of info out there on this...look it up.

I've blathered on long enough...time to go help someone. Blazer game is on in a few minutes, too. Exclamation

First of all, thanks InsTeacher, I've missed your face around here.

Amen to that! I have been in the insurance business for 26 years. I've taught insurance, sold insurance and bought insurance. Just when we think we have it all nailed down, everything changes.

The greatest thing about this forum is that we aren't all "experts" in the field. It would be totally boring to always discuss insurance with only people who thought they knew it all already.

We have an excellent "Guide" section (top of page - third tab), with useful, informative information about all types of insurance. The material is probably somewhat out of date because no one maintains it. We need people to keep this info current and it is always there for anyone who wants to learn more about insurance.

There are blogs on insurance maintained by members of this community. All the info on the blogs is free, as well.

People are always going to make posts like - "How much insurance do I need on my car?" - I don't know how we could prevent that.

The problem is when members start creating posts about the different types of cars, the state, the liability exposure, etc., instead of saying something like - "The only way to get a correct answer to your question is to make contact with an auto insurance agent in your area." This should be the end of this thread, period.

Certainly glad you mentioned this area. We just aren't good at this.

If we are responding to a question about "life insurance", our response should use the term "life insurance" or at least "insurance". If you went to Google searching for "home insurance", what would you type in the search box?

The same holds true with "auto insurance claims" questions. The response would be more popular to the search engines if the response included the words "auto insurance claim".

I think we all need to concentrate more in this area.

We have some 4,000 registered members and only about 10 or less are posting here on a regular basis. Where are the other 3,990, why did they leave, and how can we get some of them back?

I think the newsletter we were so excited about and let die, should be brought back and sent to all 3,990 members to tell them about important changes to the community and that we need them to help this community grow.

Every post here is important whether it's from an insurance expert or from someone who has never been in the business. If people want to learn more about insurance, then our posts must be informative, not just idle "chatter", which is why this thread was started in the first place.

Go Titans!!

Dear all,

Let me share something from my side too!

I would not mind if you all carry on discussing something in a particular direction that may indirectly help establishing a fact associated with the topic. I'd entirely leave it on our community members to feel free and decide whats right and whats wrong. I do agree to this fact that sometimes we would need to discuss on supportive issues, but I guess it would help us a lot if we don't let our discussion fall on to a mere interpersonal chat-session concerning petty issues. What do you all think about it?

I'd believe that the best way to help out the newbies is to ask them questions regarding their problem. If such questions are open-ended, then it would give them an opportunity to think and describe. This way, it would bring out a lot of other points associated with their problems thus giving us a better picture.

Yes, we are already working towards making our pages more accessible for the end-user. Though it demands a good bit of analysis, I'm sure you'd be glad to know that quite a few of our pages are ranking well with good key phrases across major search engines.

Thanks for your suggestion. Its surely a good one!

I'd keep it in mind and consult with you as soon as we're up to it.

When we started with our forums, I always believed it would be an uphill task to keep the general consumers involved in it continuously. I'd say that, since I feel each person has his or her specific problems with the industry services. As soon as a problem gets solved the person loses interest on what the community has to say. One important factor is the lack of time. Another important factor is the lack of insurance knowledge. I've come across members who'd return to our forums even after a gap of 6 months with a new problem. This leads me to believe that our community members don't forget us so easily!

Newsletters are certainly a great idea..we'd be able to continue with this as soon as we have a little more of technical assistance in our side!

Another thing, I'd like you to know is that- we are planning upon developing a system that would not only involve more of the insurance professionals into this platform, but would also urge them to stay attached to it. I'll keep on sharing about it from time to time and ask for your feed backs in between.

Till then...I'd request everyone to stay linked and march ahead!

Regards,

Lakemen
