Liability Claim on Rental unit

had a question regarding a fire that occurred in a duplex that I was renting.

On 04.18.11, while I was out of my own, a fire started in my home possibly due to a candle. However, no one was home and I am not sure if it was left on. I lost everything including our family pet puppy. I received a call today from the owner's insurance company stating that they wanted to set-up a liability claim. Does this mean they are going to try to sue me? She said they would have DMA claims go to the property to take photos, I told the adjuster I lost everything and currently am homeless with my husband and 4 children.

Any advice that you could offer in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

M recommendation is if you have renters insurance that you report the loss to them. As a renter you'd be responsible for damage that you caused. It's up the owner/owners insurance company to be able to prove that you caused the loss. They will usually hire a cause and origin investigator to determine what caused the fire.

It seems it could then take a little longer if an investigator gets involved. Am I right!

About as long as it takes for the investigator to get there, do his job, and write a report. 10 day to 2 weeks would be about all in most cases.

Well this seems to be a serious matter.
Consult properly with your insurance company and ask them to talk to the owner's insurance company. I am sure they will come out with a proper and fair solution.
