Theft Insurance Claim State Farm

Hello! I am trying to sort out a theft at my mother's home. Unfortunately, for some reason the policy changed and business equipment on the property won't be covered but that was a poor error in judgement on my mom's part.. We have been vandalised in the past but have only claimed once in 20 years but this is so large I am going to file a claim.

However, we have a 4 car garage and the bay for storage, tools, equipment, power tools and so forth was wiped out and all was taken. And, the guest house was broken into and my sister's stuff, who is a grown woman, was taken in addition to the electronics inside.

My question, there is no lock on the guest house will there be a problem with the claim? A police report was filed and investigated. Also, after reading the boards I have been trying to figure out how to quantify what was owned to the insurance company and I have decided it is just easier to do what we have receipt for. No receipts for costco or home depot stuff just multiple purchases on Amex. And, it just doesn't seem worth it to fight....

Any ideas?!?! Thanks!!

Only if it's an exclusion under the policy which typically it is not.

...my sister's stuff...

Your or your mothers policy may not provide coverage for your sisters stuff unless she is a dependent of some kind. She needs her own coverage for her property.

I would recommend that you list EVERYTHING that was stolen. Do not do the insurance companies job for them. If there is a reason they are not going to cover something, let them explain to you why they are paying or not paying for certain items. If you need a form to list out all of the missing contents on please let me know and I would be happy to send one for your use. Typically what I have my clients list is: Description, date purchased, where purchased, how much purchased for and if you have receipts that will obviously make it all much easier but again I would not leave anything off. Also, you mentioned Costo items, I am not certain but I believe they keep a record of everything that your purchased so you may want to contact them to see if they do have it.
I am not certain but I do believe that your sisters property should be covered as well as she is family member living with your mother.
Let me know if you would like for me to send you a blank contents inventory form.
Good luck...
