mom n law

by psnoopydog59 » Fri Dec 21, 2012 07:07 pm

My question is "Mom n law is going to live with my wife and I. Will she need a separate policy for her stuff or can she be covered on our house policy."

And, "will this have any affect on her Social Security check"

Thank You

Bill

If your mother-in-law will be a permanent resident of your household, her property will likely be covered, but you'll need to disclose this to your insurance company, and may have to pay a slightly higher premium for additional coverage, if any. As far as your liability coverage, you'll probably want to add her as a named insured.

There will be no impact on her Social Security or Medicare.

If she is there as a guest, even then, your home insurance will probably extend coverage for her stuff. There might be limits applied. Check your documents.

Coverage for "guests" in homeowner's insurance is extremely limited due to the potential for fraud.

Family members are covered for their personal belongings, as long as you are not charging her rent. Just make sure you have enough coverage. She also would NOT be able to be listed as a named insured, since she has no financial interest in the home.

This is incorrect. If Mom/Mom-in-Law is a permanent resident in the household, she most certainly could be included as an insured even without being named, just as any children or teenagers are -- policy language covers that. She does not need insurable interest in the home, only in her property.
