Does renters insurance cover car vandalism?

I’ve recently shifted to a rented apartment with my wife and have left my father’s house. I have procured a renters insurance after we came down here. I was just wondering if the insurance would cover for damages due to any vandalism when the car is parked within the apartment.

Depending upon the type of coverage options that you've got on your renter's insurance, any such typical insurance policy will cover your personal belongings lost/damaged due to vandalism, theft, fire, windstorm, hail, lightening or smoke.

Your renters policy will specifically exclude coverage for the vehicle. So, no.

While this information is broadly accurate (there is no such thing as "lightening") with regard to personal property under a tenant's policy, it is entirely wrong with regard to damage to a motor vehicle as the OP asked.

tcope's response is 100% accurate. That damage is only covered under the Comprehensive/Other than Collision part of a Personal Auto Policy, not a tenant's policy.

Hi Max,

After heeding your advice, I looked for a proper answer and came across this website: http://www.insweb.com/renters-insurance/FAQ.html with a similar info as mine.

So, is the information here in the above website too is incorrect?

The only mention I found of an auto is, " If an item is stolen from your car, it will likely be covered by renters insurance too."

The answer to the OP's question is that renters insurance will not cover any damage to the auto. Your post only mention coverage when referring to the renters policy.

adam . . .

Perhaps you should have read the first question posed on the site you linked to:

Q: “What does renters insurance cover?”

A: Depending on your coverage options, a renter’s insurance policy covers your personal items lost due to:

theft
fire
lightning
smoke
windstorms
hail
vandalism

is the information here in the above website too is incorrect?

The information is 100% accurate. The only person who doesn't know what's right or what's wrong is you! And that's because you don't have any experience as a licensed insurance agent.

A person's auto is not a "personal item" under a homeowner's or tenant's policy. If you were a licensed insurance agent or broker anywhere in the world, you would probably know this. But since you aren't, you don't.

You should find a blog on a topic that is within your range of knowledge and expertise and post there instead of here. All you do here -- most of the time -- is obscure the issue rather than shed any new light on it.

So Max has spoken from the Agents side, and I am going to speak from the adjusters side.

Will your vehicle be covered under a renters policy if it vandalized...NO. Your auto insurance will cover that. Motor Vehicles are specifically excluded from coverage. In some cases golf carts which are used solely on the property you live on are considered personal property and not a motor vehicle.

Will your personal items in the car be covered under your renters policy if your car is vandalized and personal items are stolen.... in most cases yes. The reason I say most cases is because some policies may excluded items such as detachable faceplates from your radio or even CD's/Cassettes. Would your golf clubs be covered under Renters? Yes. Your deductible will apply

Most homeowners and renters policy will cover your personal belongings anywhere in the world for theft or vandalism. Hopes this helps. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
