hi!
I hope the car is registered in your name. If its so, then you're the one who is responsible for getting a liability insurance in place. The insurance law may sometimes safeguard you from being sued by penalties in case you're not gonna use your car or remain uninsured.
Incase your vehicle needs repairs, convey your license plate to the office of Motor Vehicles. This way you'd be able to detach yourself from any liability attached to the vehicle. regards, Sasha T.

Hi, if you follow my advice you can certainly find an alternate way to deal with this situation!
Why don't you go to the local motor vehicles office and declare that you won't drive your car for a fixed period of time?
You can always do this till the period your insurance is active and till the point of time the car is registered in your name. It would be considered as an affidavit of non-use. Don't forget to mention your vehicle identification number as also the date of commencement and the end-date of your non-use of the same. Get your declaration statement notarized n filed under the Office of Motor vehicles anytime till you have your liability insurance in place.
wish you all the best, fatman

Hey...as soon as you get it repaired n wanna start driving it again, make sure that you don't forget to renew the insurance once more and show a proof to the office of motor vehicles. you'll gain out o' it! John K.
