Some Health Insurance Tips For 2008...

by Ohio Health Insurance » Sat Feb 09, 2008 12:25 am

Hello. I'm a broker with 27 years of experience, and I hope my comments will be helpful.

*Consider HSAs. They aren't for everyone, but if you are healthy, and can use a tax break, it may be worth considering.

*If you smoke, there are some companies that don't charge as much as others. And likewise, some companies have larger non-smoking discounts.

*If you have an individual or family plan, consider raising your major medical deductibles. Often, by raising your deductible from $1000 to $2500, you may save between $750 & $1500 per year!

Feel free to email me at service[at]ohioquotes.com if you would like any additional information!

Great advices, I'm sure many are looking for this information. Hope your experience and expertise will help the community members to understand their health insurance policy better.

However, IMO before raising the level of the deductibles you should reconsider you financial condition, because once you commit to pay higher deductibles you should be capable of paying it at the time of need. Failing which may even result in losing the health coverage.

Agreed Jeremy. Welcome to ampminsure Ohio Health Insurance.

Health insurance is one such aspect that is not overly discussed in many front but plays a very important role in our lives. There are many shadowy areas in peoples mind regarding the health plans. I'm sure that by sharing knowledge and experience we'll be able to create awareness among the members about it as well. And we appreciate any such initiative towards it.

Once again welcome, Ohio and wish to see you more often in the forums. Enjoy your stay!!

Hi Ohio Health Insurance!! You have chosen quite a lengthy screen name...LOL

I'm curious about your comments, the following one in particular...

*If you smoke, there are some companies that don't charge as much as others. And likewise, some companies have larger non-smoking discounts.

I know that the smokers are charged high premium and to me its quite justified, ain't our objective is to curb smoking altogether. If they are encouraged with lower premium they'll never quit smoking and the extra cost of insuring smokers will spread among the community. A non-smoker then will have to pay more for insuring a smoker with no surcharge. :(

Hi Darla

Re the smoking...in many states, Aetna will not charge an extra premium if you are a smoker. However, you must be in excellent health and have a BMI below 26-29.

Jeremy...Quite true about the deductibles. Of course, in most cases, your outstanding bill to the hospital can be broken up into monthly payments, thus making a higher deductible more feasible.

And yes...I do have a long screen name. It wasn't meant to be that way. I'll change it one of these days!

Thanks. I don't know much about blogging, so I will read that link.

Nah...not prospecting. I don't expect to get any business from this site. On a few others, I might get a few each year from Ohio, but that is it.
