Need an opinion

I have had what I believe to be a complete slab failure in my home...the crack runs from the the front to the back of the house,in the floor and the ceiling....I have read my policy, and simply do not understand this part of the coverage...

Should I just contact my insurance company, or get my ducks in a row by spending the money on an engineer/private adjuster first...I want to have a little info on where I stand, before contacting my insurance company.

I lost all paperwork, including blueprints during Hurricane Katrina, so I have no "slab design" papers to give the insurance company.

My builder is in prison and I have no idea who his insurance company was, if he even had it...I am having a hard time finding info on this subject on the web...I have even contacted a few local atty's and they said "sorry", but had no advice on the matter....

My uncle is a nationally certified homebuilder, and he is the one who told me that it was bad, and I needed to pursue it....but, he lives in another state, and has no idea how to handle it here...

Any advice would be welcomed....

Not every cracks in the slabs are covered. Normally, leakage or risky type of constructions (with distinct features) have more chances of being paid back. It obviously can be stated that degree of problem is the deciding factor. I think if you are confident the problem is complex enough, it would be better to contact a good profiled adjuster, better show them a photograph initially.

In case, not so sure about it, its necessiates to gather more info from experienced persons say agents. Even the type of policy, company would make difference. People here on this community would also share more information on this.

yes, then you will know where you stand coverage wise, i'm not clear on why this slab is cracked, you know that all homeowners policys are named peril policys so unless the slab cracked due to one of these perils doubtful you will have coverage with your h.o. policy if this is cracking due to poor workmanship on the builders part, then of course your h.o. will not cover that, and you need to find out if the builder had ins. at the time he built your home.
