Am i screwed?

by mike_2460 » Sun Nov 25, 2007 05:43 pm

I recently was behind in my coverage, but still insured untill, nov. 18. I unfortuantly had a total loss of my vehicle on the 2 and my insurance ran out on the 18th. I have since paid half of what i owe on their website although it gives me no option to pay the other half. Also i just got a letter from the local bmv saying i had an uninsured accident on the second am i truly screwed?

Hi there.

You DID say that you were covered until the 18th. Right?? Well thats just what that means. Of course, your insurance company may not like the fact that your vehicle was totaled right before the policy expired, but if the accident happened on the 2nd and you were covered until the 18th, then you were within the scope of coverage.

Maybe in the future to prevent that from ever happening again, you may want to consider putting your payments on an automatic draft from a checking or savings account. Looks like you just made it by the skin of your teeth, so just take that as a lesson learned.

Very true I guess!
It seems that you may avail the coverage benefits this time.

Well, I think the local BMV just keeps some of the car registration related information & the status of the car. Isn't it ?

The first thing I believe you gotta do over here is to communicate with your carrier & see what they have to say! Keep us informed please.

Also, you should be able to go to your insurance company and get an affidavit of insurance. This should give the BMV the information that they need to not suspend your license. If I were you, I would ask my insurance agent if I could mail that to the BMV myself. I would not leave it in his hands. That way you will be certain that it got there. Or at least if they say that they didnt get it, you can eliminate the variable of "maybe it was my insurance agent."

I'm not sure what state you are in but you absolutely do not want your license to get suspended because of a no insurance accident. They will have no pity on you.

Hi mike_2460, and welcome...

You are confusing me....you say, your coverage was in force till the 18th accident occured the 2nd, but say

I have since paid half of what i owe on their website although it gives me no option to pay the other half

I don't understand this....did your check bounce?

Please be a little more specific if you need additional help. If your policy period was paid up until the 18th then at 12:01 am on the 19th your policy lapsed. So, if you loss occured the 2nd, 16 days prior I don't see the rub. They should've already paid your claim.....Somethin' ain't stirrin' the koolaid here...Please provide additional information.

Lori bought up an important point, I'm not sure how I missed that one, but if your premiums are past due, then that wouldve meant that the policy will only go as long as you were paid up to. So there is a possibility that your coverage wasnt in force. I can see the reason for your concern.

You should be covered, the dates are not adding up at all. Unless you did not pay your premiums, what was your cancellation date if you did not pay your premium?
