Wow, this post is getting just a bit strange.....LOL

As to the OPs question, here we go.

The Coordination of Benefits provision:

1. establishes the order of priority of payment if you are covered by more than one GROUP medical insurance plan. It does not coordinate individual plan; they have their own policy language for these situations.

2. states that the "birthday rule" (not birthday insurance) applies, and this means, as correctly stated by other replies, that the plan of the parent whose birthday falls earliest during the year would be the primary provider of coverage, with the other parent being the secondary, or "excess" provider. If the parent's birthday falls on the same day, whichever parent has been in their plan the longest would be primary.

3. IS provided for by statute in all states. It started initially from Wa. D.C. as a model that could be adopted by all carriers, and it has more or less become standardized throughout the country. Look to your individual state for tweaks on the federal language.

4. Keep in mind that if a family court required a particular parent to carry the coverage on the kids- the birthday rules can easily go out the window. The statutory language recognizes this, and if a court says that parent "X" will provide the primary coverage, then the insurer must comply.

There is more to this, but not much. It was initiated to take care of the confusion that occurred without the rule. It was really strange back in the day how coverage applied if you had more than one group policy, especially if you had a kid! Phew!

Hope this helps!

This is quite a new term for me "Birthday Rule". I would love to know more about it. Please do post your reply as soon as anyone gets some more information on this. Sounds very interesting!!!!

Actually, this is also the first time that I heard about birthday insurance. I try to search about it over the Internet and here's what I have found.

According to one blog:
Quote:
Birthday Insurance,” a type of Life Insurance that sends grandchildren a birthday card and a check, for the rest of their lives after their grandparents passed away
