Parents and Life Insurance

For those of us who still have living parents, is it a good idea to make sure that they have sufficient life insurance to at least help with the final expenses we will one day face? Is that smart or is it greedy?

Is the farm in your husbands name yet? How old is your mother in law? Would she listen to him if he asked her about doing it? Does she have money set aside for her own burial expenses? Alot of questions that you may want to ask her, just do it in a nice way (even if you don't want to) or have your husband discuss this with her.

Hello Hummingbird,

Unless I am reading it wrong .it makes the insurance company sound as greedy as the person taking out that big policy

Of course you're NOT reading it wrong. The insurance companies are the greediest of them all. They love for people to take out big policies so they can manipulate the terms and conditions of the policy and cancel it before having to pay a death claim.

A policy out on her is easy. Just tell her what you'd like to do, why you'd like to do it, and pay the premiums. You might chat with a few of your family members to see if they'd like to help out with the payments for a share of the death benefit. Otherwise, tell them they're out of luck and you and your hubby will keep all the money.

Be advised, that'll probably take any dysfunction your family currently has to a completely new level.

I'm a single mom. I DO have Life Insurance, through the Military. However...I'm looking for some good, whole, Life Insurance for my son. He's 15 years old. Just would like to know people opionions with individual companies. Thanks.

Hi sdchargersfan,

Did I read somewhere that you were a member before? If so, Welcome Back! If I didn't then - Welcome!

This comment made my head hurt. Let me explain - we are trying to build the number of blogs in this insurance community and when I heard the word "Military", the "lightbulb" went right through the top of my head.
Would you consider blogging on "Insurance And The Military"?????
If so, I can help you get started.

The key word here is "good". Many well recognized insurance companies don't even offer a "traditional" whole life insurance policy anymore.
As far as recommending a particular company, well, that is dangerous.
If I were to recommend one insurance company and the guy on the phone got smart with you, you wouldn't want my recommendation anymore.

I would look at companies like - AIG/American General, MetLife - well recognized, financially secure insurance companies.

Hello.......yes, I posted, on here QUITE sometime ago. I AM in the military..Army Reserves. Of course, I'm concerned about my son. I have a Blog statred, through DebtCC, however..I haven't written in it for sometime. SURE!!! I'm very interested in discussing Insurance, about the miltary. I appriciate the 'welcome'. I can give the 'pros' and 'cons', of Active Duty (full time) and Reserves (part time). I was in Active Duty, at one time. That would be good...I can 'do this.'...LOL

I'll have to agree with Maze.

Also; Whole or traditional life isn't a bad idea for a 15 year old. Might I also suggest you take a look at an Equity Index Universal Life Policy with a guarantee. Allianz has got a good product.

Thanks sdchargersfan for accepting the Community's invitation to blog.

We probably need to move the blog discussions to the "Pub".

Do you think the blog name - "Military Insurance" is a good one?

Your web address would be:

http://militaryinsurance.ampminsure.org

If this is OK with you, would you PM Lakemen and ask him to upload it.

Look forward to working with you.

Insinvestigator,YOU scare me! I hope you are only kidding,Icould never do what you suggested. That sounds so cold hearted. It may sound sneaky but if I did get a policy I would not want them to know. It does sound kind of like an investment of sorts.I would not mind if my kids or hubby did that for me. Anyway ,my mother in law has plenty of money she just likes to complain that she doesn't. She has investments and insurance. I think she is just afraid someone will ask her for some money so she pretends she has none. We haven't actually borrowed the money and bought the farm yet. But for all purposes it is his,or he thinks it is. He has agreed to buy it. We just need to clear some debts before he can get the loan.I have a bad feeling I will have to sign this too and I don't want to.

Sounds fun though, Huh? I'm laughing here.

My cynicism comes from the investigation of quite a few cases in which one family member rips off another (forever severing any family unity) for the sake of a few bucks. Seeing what one family member will do to another just makes me shake my head and wonder how these people sleep.
