I don't have any medical insurance through my job. Though I lost about 120 pounds during the last year, my coverage application was denied. Am I too fat to get one?

Don't know..what was the reason they denied you?

LORI.....I have a question, pertaining to obesity. I have a 'client' who has no Insurance at all. She is very overweight. She was told, by a few Insurance companies, because of her "pre-existing condition (being very overwight) that she was denied. Can an Insurance company (legally?) deny someone for that particular reason?

sure they can, they all have underwriting depts, and can decide what 'risks' they will take and what they won't.

check your states dept of ins website, you may be able to find some for her thru there, however, no question it would be very expensive.

Lori, is it true that the carriers may deny obese applicants even when they don't have any other existing health conditions? I don't see any particular reason for them to be scared under situations where the applicant is really trying hard and taking positive steps to get reduced?

LORI..I really have to 'give credit' to this particular 'client' I've been talking about. She IS losing weight (walking, trying to do exercise, etc.). You would think that an Insurance company would give her that 'credit' (lack of a better word). No doubt it would be expensive, if she could find some. Thanks for the advice.

If you've lost all the weight during the past 1 year, your insurance co. won't count on your current weight. They'd probably add half of the weight loss back to your current weight and then decide whether to go about covering you for the same.

SIL....my 'client' has told different Insurance companies all of the details (losing alot of weight, etc.). However...it just seems like that 'accomplishment' doesn't matter to them. They STILL say "high risk." Hope you follow what I'm saying. :(

Did your client lose weight consistently over a period of 2 years or more? Or is it that she lost it during one single year?

She lost about 70 pounds (so far). But, it took a few years to do it.
