Phone/Data Insurance

I recently bought a tablet phone and it cost me about $500. I use it for some heavy office work and store a lot of important data on it. Is buying phone insurance a sensible thing to do in my situation? Will the data I store in the phone memory also be covered under the policy or do I need a separate policy?

You can buy an extended warranty on the tablet (or phone... won't be both). This covers the hardware. Data is usually not covered under most insurance polices as 1... how would it be replaced? Software can simply be reinstalled.

Your best bet is to make your own routine backups.

Squaretrade offers pretty good extended warranties. Look for a 30% off code.

You can try using a cloud storage service for all your sensitive data. There are some excellent free services and you can access and upload/download your data whenever you need to, it’s like backup on the go.

As far as the hardware is concerned, there is something called Phone Insurance but its just as good as an extended warranty. It won’t cover your data but it will provide coverage for loss, theft, accidental damage and equipment failure or malfunction (after manufacturers warranty has expired). Shipping a replacement device by the next business day is usually a part of the standard package. Some have mobile security services for remotely locating your phone in case you lose it and in case of theft, lock it and purge its memory so that the data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. There are certain conditions and exclusions though.
