Can I get an insurance license with a misdemeanor?

I have 2 misdemeanors on my record in Ohio. One is 2 years old and another is 4 years old. Will this prevent me from getting a state insurance license?

I'm not sure if it will or not. I'm not much of an 'Insurance Expert' here....however......I DO know that every state is different. Were the Misdemeanors taken care of? I mean..the fines, etc.?

Really depends on what they are for.

Well, you have to disclose information about these misdemeanors in the application form for licensing. The other members have rightly mentioned that the licensing process may get affected by the severity of the misdemeanors.

Some states may restrict the applicants with criminal records from obtaining insurance agent's license altogether. Hence, check with the state licensing department's guidelines regarding licensing process for more information.

Just be honest with them and disclose your history. I know of a lot of agents that still got an insurance lic, when the same problems.

It will definitely keep some companies from appointing you.

No doubt it would.

Though different companies have different recruitment policies, but almost all run a background check on the applicant before absorbing them. Hence, some may certainly disallow the OP from seeking employment in their company.

However, the best policy is to remain honest. The misdemeanors are however old and if the OP has lead a clean life after that, I think it may not affect his employment prospect.

ALOT of Employers ( whether it's an Insurance company or not..) go 'back' about 10 years, or so, on your Criminal Background. Where I am employeed ( i work for an agency that takes care of the Elderly..) if yuo have ANYTHING on your record ( in the last 10 years) and it doesn't matter WHAT or HOW OLD the 'incident' was, they will not hire you.

Once your criminal record gets expunged you'd probably get a chance to obtain your license. Otherwise you'd be disqualified by default.

In your license application form you'd find provisions to fill up any information referring to your criminal record.

My friend,

You'd certainly need to mention circumstances depicting your arrest, the conviction and the cause of your arrest .

If you'd be able to offer a copy of sentencing certificate reflecting the disposition of your criminal charges it would be better for you. Once you're done with this you may very well submit this piece of information with your application.

Honesty is always good strong advice and would be better than getting caught up in a lie. I seen here that ANON, you mention once the record is expunged. How long does it usually take for this to happen? I thought once you had a record it stayed there permenantly.
