Private Unemployment Insurance: What does it offer?

by Chris Bantly » Tue Mar 17, 2009 01:08 am

In speaking with a client this afternoon, he states he was contacted via telephone by a company (could not remember the name) offering him a private unemployment insurance policy. When I questioned him further, he offered the following summary of his understanding of the program:

- He would be charged a monthly premium

- There would be no waiting periods and coverage would be in effect immediately

- If he became unemployed, the insurance policy would pay out his FULL income for up to 24 months.

- Unemployment could be for any reason except for voluntary termination of employment (quitting, or being fired for due cause)

He could not really explain anything other than the key points above. He believed that his monthly premium would be about $80 a month and his current income is $3000 a month (works in manufacturing). He asked them to send him information and the agent stated he would call back and give him more info.

My first thought was that it may be some sort of scam designed to take advantage of a group of workers that are being hit hard by unemployment. I want to know if anybody has ever heard of a policy or program similar to this? I know that there are "credit protection" programs through most credit card companies or loan companies that will pay your payments for a period of time...but this was offering to replace income!

My other thought is that if somebody truly believed they were going to be laid off in the next couple years...that $80 a month would be an absolute bargain!

THOUGHTS??

Chris , private unemployment insurance policies are not scam. There are private insurers who would offer unemployment protection against premium payment. However, the client would still need to get all the facts clear & also check with the authenticity of the provider that has contacted him before signing the application. But private unemployment insurance is a reality.

I got your point, but at the same time, aren’t all the insurance policies bought on probabilities? A homeowner’s house may never catch fire, but he still prefers to pay for the fire coverage worrying about the ‘what ifs?’ The same I guess is with the UI coverage.

What if you don't qualify for the state unemployment benefits, the private unemployment insurance would then provide the necessary support to the insured.

Given the market situation & the way the economy is going to perform in the coming some years, one may consider that getting laid-off is highly likely and since UI would cover only a portion of his income, considering a back-up policy isn’t wrong.

insurance can be on any aspect which have "uncertainties" associated with it.thus it is not a surprise to me to have the UI in the market.

Rather it could a hot selling in this current situation. what you say?

Hi,

I don't have any objections with private unemployment insurance.
It's just that I don't think it would be wise to get enrolled in such a program unless you're too sure of the coverage benefits. It's gonnabe hard on you if a replacement of $3,000 (that too without a waiting period) won't come true for a monthly payment of $80.

I am still not convinced. Will the insurance company pay full payment as mentioned by Chris? :?:

The idea is one that I could see selling to clients quite easily, but it almost sounds too good to be true. Several things made me suspicious about private unemployment insurance:

1) They stated that there would be no waiting periods and that the policy could be issued in as little as 24 hours. If this were completely true, then people would be able to take advantage of it whenever they needed it!

2) The fact that when he asked them to send him information or literature, the agent stated he would call him back later to give him additional info. Normally if anybody over the phone refuses to send you something in writing...it sounds a little fishy.

3) The fact that it pays 100% of the income is somewhat remarkable.

One thing I forgot to mention before, the client was told that he would be eligible for unemployment and that this was additional compensation. From the little that I know about state unemployment programs...you have to disclose all income from all sources in order for them to determine the amount. If you had a supplemental income source, then you wouldn't be eligible for state unemployment benefits (there's no lack of income to pay bills!).

The idea sounds pretty solid and I could see myself selling the policies to some of my clients...but I'd have to know all the fine print and understand a little bit more!

I’d give this insurer a benefit of doubt. It may really vary between the companies. Some may only partially compensate the lost income, when others may claim to offset the entire loss.

The private unemployment insurance policies don’t have to follow the state UI benefit guidelines and therefore can actually differ from one another. It is a highly competitive market and what you offer can make all the differences in your business.

However, IMO the customer needs to get all the facts cleared before signing the papers. Also special inquiries should be made on the claim payment history of the insurer. One must comb through the private unemployment insurance policy document before accepting the offer.

I've done quite a bit of searching and cannot find any private insurance for job loss/ the only one that was in business was "PaycheckGaurdian" wich closed when the depression started in 2008. It was just too risky and they stopped selling the policy!

Does anyone know of names of others???
