High Rates

Does anyone know a ball park figure for someone who has had their license suspended for one dui. My son really did a dumb thing and he knows it. He was paying high premiums to begin with because of speeding tickets.Well, his rates were just beginning to go down below 300 a month an he did a really stupid thing. He was arrested and charged with DUI. He can now get his license back BUT he has not of yet.I am very afraid if what his rates will be .is there anyway he can get his rate lowered maybe by going under his wife's policy or something? I'm sure he has now learned his lesson.

I don't think he DID learn his lesson yet. I don't mean to be 'harsh', but....if he ALREADY had speeding tickets, and THEN did the 'DUI thing', I don't think he learned much of anything. If he DOES go under his wife's policy (if his wife's Insurance Co will allow it..) her rates will probably sky rocket!!

Wel it takes a while for those things to fall off your record. He had not had a ticket in a couple of yrs.Till now I don't think I will have to worry about this happening again. But I think you are probly right about her rates going up. He would have to pay on her policy a lot or just do like he is now and let her drive him around till the whole thing falls off his driving record. Does anyone know how long that takes?

Kids do dumb things... and he'll pay for it. In my case (I was once a dumb kid too) it took 3 years to fall off my record for insurance. (It is always there for the state to see). At the time I was paying $600.00 per year on a 2 year old car (27 years old). Following my bone head move my company dropped me and my agent found me coverage for $2,400 from another company. I went to progressive and got coverage for around $1,200. After 3 years, my rates went back to around my pre-DUI rates or maybe a little bit above.

Of course i wanna cheaper insurance. Getting car insurance cheaper may simply be a matter of using your car less on the road and perhaps, if appropriate, insuring it for only pleasure driving or limit the distance that you will drive your vehicle over the following year.
After establishing my vehicle's possible usage, I think I can get car insurance quote from a dealer, a broker or direct with an insurance company.

Dasfuk, 600 a year isn't bad ,Thats 50 a month. Is that 2,400 a year? and the progressive for 1,200 is that a year? if it is for a year that is still cheap . Msotly i think he puts down that he drives his (truck) to work and back. His truck is not quiet paid for alsomost though which means full coverage.Did your rates cover full coverage?I will tell him to check out progressive.

I missed that 50 a month after the DUI. Yes, that was 2,400 per year and 1,200 per year (the DUI was the only thing on my record at the time). And yes all dollar amounts were for "full coverage". If he looks at any quote he gets, he should notice that it is not the 1st party coverage that will be expensive (comp, coll) it will be the liability. Although my rates went down after 3 years my liability coverage stayed higher for a couple more after the 3 years. If you think about it, any first party loss will have a set price (value of vehicle). It is the third party loss that is the unknown, and the reason for the higher rates.

The dollar amounts will really depend on the state he lives and other points on his record.

WOW! That is some good price. Thats works out to only 200 and 100 a month WITH a DUI. He was paying over 300 a month with a couple of tickets . I think he only has this one thing (the DUI) left on there.I feel sure the rest has fallen off by now. Plus he went to traffic school .He has his dad's lead foot. He got a ticket once, because he stopped at a traffic sign where it was marked to stop back from the sign and could not see what was coming so he pulled up slowly to see if the way was clear but did not stop a second time and they gave him a ticket because they did not see him stop the first time. His dad was with him at the time and tried to tell them but they would not listen.Anyway thanks for explaining that .I have a better understanding of the insurance and how it works now. We live in Ky. We used to live in SC who was a high risk state.

The traffic school is fine, but it really shouldn't make any change on his rates. 6 points are given for a DUI with a total of 12 points allowed until your license is suspended. By going to "school" you get an additional 2 point allowance to 14.... it doesn't actually take points off your license. Remind him that he will now be a target, once he is allowed to drive. Driving late at night or when sleepy is a bad idea. Driving with only one drink in him is a bad idea. Any tickets are a bad idea. Myself, I started driving like someone Grandma....and still do 8 years later. (I would lose me job if I lost my license or actually now got a DUI or more then 4 points on my license.)

The Traffic school was for the last ticket he had not the dui. Well I hate for him to have to pay all that money for insurance and he has been a target for a lot of years. He has been stopped for any and everything.I truly think he has learned his leson but will pay through his pocket for many years to come I am afraid.ANy idea how long that will come off his insurance?
