Will secondary insurance help or harm my situation?

I have comprehensive coverage through my employer. However, I also have a "skeletal deformity" that causes TMJ problems (among other issues) that requires surgery. My employer's plan has a specific exclusion for this surgery (word for word denies what I need, for the reasons I need it).
I found a "catastrophic coverage" plan that specifically COVERS the required surgery.

My question is, will purchasing this secondary coverage actually cover me for this procedure? Which plan would then be considered my primary?

As an added twist, the two plans are through the same insurance company. Does this pose any additional problems?

It would not matter is one was primary if one does not cover the procedure. If the primary policy will cover the procedure then that is that. If the primary coverage does not, then the secondary will.

Having both coverage with the same company won't matter. It's the policy wording itself that matters.

I agree with tcope. It's fine. Many people have secondary coverage under the same company. Most health insurance plans have provisions which determine how primary versus secondary coverage will be determined. Have you reviewed this just to be on the safe side?

Thanks for the quick replies!
What do you mean by review? Should I review whether there is a provision about primary vs. secondary? Or were you referring to something more specific?

And I apologize for this being posted in Auto, I just realized it, and don't know how it got in that group. For all interested it should be posted under health. (I deleted your other thread, and moved this one to the correct category, thank you for trying to make sure it got in the correct spot--Don't worry about it, if it ever happens again, just send me a quick message or PM if I don't catch it within a day or so and move it. **edit: Thanks!
