If your neice was driving your vehicle with your permission and was negligent, and therefore liable for the damage and injury to the other party, then more than likely you too, will be held equally liable as the owner of the vehicle.
If you neice was a minor at the time, and her parent(s) had a vehicle insured, you might be able to get some coverage there. Other than that, my advise to you would be to make an agreement of repayment to the the injured parties carrier.
Let me ask you a couple of questions that can help us help you.
1. In what state did this occur?
2. When did this occur?
3. Have you not talked to the carrier all this time?
4. What happened in the accident?
5. Was your neice a minor? Did she have your permission to drive? _________________ "Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake.
