I have an 89 Buick Century that was recently totalled by an 18 wheeler here in South carolina ... I got 2 estmates to fix my car and both was round 2500.00 ....the insurance adjuster just wants to give me like 1500.00 and I dont think that is fair .......yes the car has very high mileage on it but that was my only way of going and it still runs strong ......he also says he cant find the value of my car anyone online ......now can he salvage my car without me telling him he can or can they just do it ...the car is legally mine ......but he talkin this crap of salvaging my car and i may already have a buyer for it myself ....please help

You need to find out how much your car is worth. It's tough to see why you would think the offer is unfair if you have no idea what the vehicle is worth. Would you gladly purchase your vehicle as it is for $1500.00? He must be basing the amount from something, ask him how he arrived at that figure. And no you don't have to accept it. You can cash settle with him, minus deductions and keep the vehicle. The problem with that is, your buyer will be purchasing a vehicle with a salvage title your asking price will undoubtably have to be reduced.

Please list the exact model of the Buick Century, engine size (# of cylinders) the exact mileage, all of the options (power windows/locks, foglamps, sunroof etc.) and the state you are in and I or someone else will be more than happy to run an ACV (actual cash value) evaluation. What did this buyer you mentioned offer you for the car?

I'm not sure why the adjuster would not be able to find the value of the vehicle online... unless he/she does not have any access to a paid subscription database. Also, how did he determine the value if he could not find the value online? Obviously he did obtain the value somehow.

Without knowing more information on the vehicle (type, options and miles) I come up with a value of $2700-$2900. This is for average miles. With higher miles the price would go down. In any case, the vehicle would be a total loss.

Have you come up with the value? If not, how do you know $1500 is low?

You can retain he vehicle but the adjuster would then deduct it's salvage value from his offer and may be required to inform the state that it was considered a total loss. The state may then change he title to a salvage title.
