Can PROGRESSIVE try to back bill me for 2 months of coverage plus the additional fees they tacked on, not to mention the banking fees I inncurred every time they tried to withdraw funds (via auto pay) from mu checking account? I am unemployed and simply did not have the money to pay my monthly premiums. They cancelled my in OCT. of 2009 but say I OWE them for August and Sept. + additional fees. They have even sent me to COLLECTIONS already. Is this legal?

Well, yes, if you were canceled in Oct. then you would've needed to pay the premiums for Aug and Sept. Let me ask you this...did you have a claim at ANY time, during this policy period?

probably...when you sign up for a direct debit (for anything) and they draw out the funds, and you didn't have enough in your acct. to cover the payment, this is EXACTLY the same as writing a bad check to them.

I guess what I'm not fully understanding is...if there was NO claim, then why did they not cancel it in Aug?

RE: if there was NO claim, then why did they not cancel it in Aug?

No, there wasn't any claim made by myself during this time period! They are saying they provided me 2 extra months of coverage as in a grace period...that they cannot legally just CANCEL me for non-payment, SO it is a courtesy-- two extra months they gave me to come up with my all my accruing premiums before cancelling my policy. I had paid the last month I thought I would be covered for (July) in AUGUST by calling in my payment and had been told that this payment would have to be called in by a certain date-- & no future payments could be auto deducted, which I had also requested, being in agreement with because of the bank fees (into the hundreds) I was incurring after they would keep trying to w/draw funds fdrom my already empty account-- made so by my bank fees!

This must be something your state allows...I've personally not ever heard of it...Contact your states Dept of Ins...and see if this is allowed, I seriously doubt they would be doing this if not..
