| My girlfriend does not live with me. I am trying to avoid adding her to my auto policy has she got a speending ticket last year. What will happen if I do not add her under my auto insurance policy and she gets my car in an accident? |

| As long as you gave her permission than she will be covered. The insurance follows the vehicle. If this startes to be a trend, the insurance company will inquire and either make you add her or cancel you. Be careful. |

Correct...if she does have an accident, they will ask her and you...questions like, 'is this vehicle available for her use' 'how often does she drive it' 'does she have her own set of keys' etc. If she is a regular driver, they will still cover the claim but they will make you add her..If she is a RARE and OCCASIONAL driver they won't make you add her.

| Too add to what has already been posted, when you lend your vehicle you are also lending your insurance. So, the accident may be reported on your girlfriend's driving record but will be reported on your automobile insurance record and likely will adversely affect your premium rates. |

I agree there shouldnt be a problem as long as she doesnt live in the household and is simply and occasional driver...especially if she has her own insurance. but I feel lead to bring up the following point.
liability follows the car and is usually the case w/ insurance, but there are exceptions. there are policies out there now days that specifically state in the policy they only cover the person listed on the policy. I've seen claims denied... "low cost" policies, sold primarily by nonstandard (higher risk) carriers.
check w/ your agent or at least read your policy on how it defines an "insured". The policy will spell out if permissive use is covered. States, insurance companies, and policies vary, don't learn the hard way. |
