You can check with the Medical Insurance Bureau, it might be of some help. However, they only go back 7 years so it might not help you. You can check with FindYourPolicy.com for further information but it would ask for the insurance company's name. You can also search for some documents of your mother, that could be of great help. Finally, get in touch with an insurance agency, better if you know him personally. He might be able to offer you some help.

Scarlett, just correcting a bit of misinformation regarding this comment:

MIB's records go back 13 years. Here's a link to their policy locator service:

Going through your mom's documents would be of help in this case. Get her checks and see if there have been any payments towards premiums. See if you can get hold of any document that spells 'Insurance'

Is it a hope that did have, or is there something more that makes you think something exists?

Not being the beneficiary (maybe you are maybe you're not) could be an obstacle.

Searching through paperwork, could help. Sometimes we forget that part of planning is making sure someone knows what's going on to execute the plan. Many eyes are opened at times like these, but a lot forget soon after and don't fix what they should as well.

Good luck, the MIB is a good place to start, but if you are searching for a policy that is older than 13 years in origination that'll yield nothing as has already been suggested. Careful about the search services out there, most will gladly take your money to tell you they can't find anything.

The simplest ways are often the best.
1) Look at her bank statements.
2) Keep an eye on her mail. She'll receive statements.
