Insurance companies know that they are prime targets for lawsuits, so they tend to be a tad spooked by the possibility. Would they attempt to make the case that you made the change in order to receive the sole death benefit knowing/thinking she would die soon? Secondary beneficiaries receive the payment only if the primary beneficiaries do not qualify for the payment. It is the present beneficiary who gets paid by the insurer.
