Hi wakerascals

I am not sure about the % increase in rate but smokers, any day, pose a greater threat to the insurance companies compared to the non-smokers. Hence, if you are a smoker, you will have to pay up a fairly large amount as premiums if you are going to be covered.

Smokers have a 90% chance to make a claim due to smoking related illness. Hence, they will definitely be charged more. I hope someone can come along and tell you the approximate %.

A number of studies have shown that drivers who smoke have a higher risk of getting into an accident than non-smokers. So more and more auto insurance companies are offering a discount to non-smokers on their insurance premium. Though the percentage of discount varies from company to company, a typical non-smoker discount could be about 5%.
