my company keeps pressuring us subcontractors to get fein #'s for some reason i do not think that we should have to do not own any shares of the business and we are not independent subcontractors we have managers that tell us what to do so on at times it seems that i am more of an employee then a subcontractor

It is not unusual for subcontractors to get fein. You can also get your Federal Employer Identification Number.

To my knowledge, (may depend on state laws) if you are a subcontractor and not physically on the company's pay roll, you are not required to obtain a FEIN number. The only time an individual would require a FEIN # is for a an business that is incorporated, an LLC or a small company with limited employees.
