auto insurance beginner questions

Hi. Never owned a car before nor have I ever purchased auto insurance before.

So I'm looking into renting a car for about a month. From what I've been reading, it seems that a non owner policy coverage is the type of insurance I should be looking to.

Where do I purchase the non owner policy coverage? Do they offer it at the car rental place or at an auto insurance company (like progressive or all-state)? If both, which one should I go for?

Also, what exactly is auto insurance quotes? I keep hearing about them. Is it just something in writing that tells you what kind of coverages you can get for your car?

From what people tell me, not many carriers write a non-owners policy or perhaps many agents don't know about it. Contact a local agent (independent might be easier) and inquire on this.

The insurance through the rental agency is _very_ expensive.

A quote is the price for the coverage that you want. Since the price is based on _many_ different factors and even from carrier to carrier for the same coverage, the give you a "quote". Same as if you had a contractor give you a price for some work.

A non owners policy was designed for someone who does not own a car, as the name implies. its generally a tool for a higher risk driver that need a state financial responsability filing to get their license back from suspension. I have worked for several companies including my current employer, that writes non owner policies. The policies generally exclude coverage when driving a car that is owned by someone in your household or is regularly available for your use. Most standard policies will cover you for a temporary replacement vehicle like a rental car, but if your sole vehicle is a rental car. Not so much

Hope this helps.
