I was involved in a car accident. I was at fault. I only have liability coverage. My question is..... Can my insurance declare my vehicle a total loss even though they are not paying for the damages done to my vehicle?

Do you know what it takes for a vehicle to be considered a total loss? Did they ever tell you that they're considering the option of declaring your vehicle a "total loss"?

Of what they told me, if the repairs exceed the value of the vehicle they cosider that a total loss. But in my case, because of liability coverage I'm paying for the repairs (which do not exceed the value) and my insurance wants me to file for a salvage title. Can they do that?

Someone is really confused in this situation. If your carrier is not addressing the damage to your vehicle they cannot make you do anything about the repairs. They also would not bother with determining the extent of the damages. So I have no idea why they would be telling you that you need to obtain a salvage title.

That's what I thought. Is there anything I can do about about this situation?

Absolutely! Contact your state's Department of Insurance (or other agency that regulates insurance companies in your state).
