This question is so open ended (and it's not really a specific question either) that it's not possible to give a good answer.

If you live with your parents and have a drivers license you should be listed on their policy. If you are not, you are _always_ taking a risk that their policy won't cover the loss in anyway.

My son isn't driving yet, but,.....when he gets his DL, and he drives my car, isn't this the reason why I DO have Liability or Collision, to cover him while he is driving my car?

Yes. If I pay for 1 widget is it fair that I take 4 or 5? I did pay for a widget.

Perhaps a bad example but you are entering into a contract.... payment for service. Part of this contract states that you need to tell your carrier about certain people in your household. This is far as anyone who has a drivers license has it for a reason... to drive a car. What car are they going to driver... the one they have easy access to all of the time.

You can't expect an insurance company to cover a risk that they are not collecting a premium for.

I won't get into the details but someone living in the household and who is not listed on the policy _might_ still be covered but as I mentioned, this is always a chance.

If you are a named insured on your parents policy, you're fine. If not, it get's pretty dicey. Best bet is to stay on your parents policy as long as you can.

Wonder why insurers ask the question: How many persons over the age of 14 are living in your home? It helps to identify the 18 year olds that either need to be added to Mom & Dad's policy or excluded and need to have their own, and it also identifies those "up and coming" drivers yet to be licensed who will need to be added or excluded in a few years, too. It is also intended to identify roommates or tenants that need to be excluded.
