How long does it take to get the results from a swab test for hiv and tobacco? Is the testing and results done in the local office? Or is it performed at a testing center or the major insurance company?? Does the local insurance employees see the results of the test? When will i recieve the resyults? How do I recieve the results by mail or phone? Its been thursaday since i had the test done and now its the following tuesday and I havent heard anything yet. I was just wandering about it all. Will I know the results of the test negative or positive?? And is it just viewed by me and me only not my local insurance company??

I think it's a routine check-up and so there's nothing to worry about it!

Yes, it's more of a routine check. It's important for it gives the carrier an idea of whether the applicant is risky or not!

Sounds like your life insurance agent did not do a good job of explaining the procedure/process to you, and also that you did not read the HIV testing consent disclosure that you signed, and were given a copy of.

HIV testing is NOT performed by the insurance company or its agents. Agents collect the saliva sample, send it to a third-party laboratory the insurance company contracts with, and the lab sends the results to the insurance company. Agents are NOT privileged to know the results, positive or negative, and you would only receive some form of notification from the insurance company if the test result was positive. That notification would go to your medical professional, not you, if you indicated on your consent form that you want the information to go to a doctor or nurse practitioner.

Reporting of HIV testing usually takes 3-7 days from the time the lab receives the saliva sample. It's too soon for you to receive a notification of a positive result, and, again, you will not receive any notice if the result is negative. "No news is good news."

Does your sense of urgency indicate that you are expecting a positive result?

I was very confused with the testing procedure I hd no idea they would perform such tests on me while just renewing a higher life policy. I was not told of the test till I signed alot of papers and then they layed out a swab test in which I have never heard or seen b4 and then I asked what it was used for and they said test u for HIV and tobacco. They never gave me a copy of the release form HIPPA form or nothing I only signed it after the test so i didnt know anything about the procedures of the results of the test! I feel very mislead and YES very nervous and anxious about results ALTHOUGH Im quite sure I dont have HIV however u never know right?? I always worry about everything. My biggest fear is that the insurance company will find out the results in which u stated and that worries me the most because I know those people in that main office very well and Im afraid of my results getting out to the public especially in my local town. So again the results r sent to the insurance company right so they would know the results right?? Another thing they said i would recieve something n the mail a couple of day later in the mail and Id would have to send them a copy of it she didnt explain that to me either so whats that all about?? Is that not going to be a test result?? Surely the testing place would send me a result one way or the other right?? Also if the results r fine etc shouldnt I be getting renewed papers from the insursance office stating my new policy?? If the results r bad then it would be a change in the premium or a total cancellation of the policy right?? Is there a place I can call for the information on my tests results?? Im very worried and concerned about this Im so afraid of my infor being leaked out and people knowing of my results EVENTHOUGH im quite sure Im negative I still worry! Doesent the test only take 20 minutes to get the results if so if they sent it dfar away for testing wouldnt that mislead the results and shouldnt I know something by now after 4 days if it was positive?? thanks so much for your information and help Im really concerned about this? I feel very mislead and was noit even given a copy of the privacy agreements. it was all like sign papers and get out of there NO discussion about the tests at all! Please help! Thanks!

Is there anyway i can find out the results of the test without me having to sit and wait and worry so long?? How long is the maxium wait till I know for sure my test results r negative?? You were not simply "renewing" a policy, you were applying for more insurance, and the insurance company is within its right to underwrite you for the increase.

Now, let's get several things straight. First, the lab result is not seen by the agent or anyone else in the agency. And you don't see it either. It is only sent to the insurance company.

I don't know what state you're in, but in most states, an HIV test consent (not the same as a HIPAA consent) is usually given on a multipart (duplicate/triplicate) form and the insured gets a copy of that form after they sign. On the form, there is a space to indicate, in advance, the name of the physician, or other healthcare professional, that you would like to receive any report of a positive test result. If you leave that section blank (or write "NONE" as many agents do), if your test results in a positive, the insurance company will contact you by letter to say, "We need the name of a healthcare professional to release your HIV test results to," because they normally do not release the results directly to the insured either.

I feel so very angry and mislaead and confused and angry!

I can understand your anger, but I doubt that you have been "misled" -- betrayed, perhaps, but not misled. A good agent will explain everything that's happening and why, so a person such as you won't be fraught with anxiety for days and weeks on end.

Stop the drama!! I'm sure there are far more important things happening in your life at this moment, right? If you don't hear anything in 10 days to 2 weeks, all is probably fine.

But when the agent delivers you new policy, then you can unload both barrels on him at once and demand to know why he didn't do a better job of explaining what was happening, what all the paperwork was about, and so on.

My father is actually the one who owns the policy on me He pays the premium etc and in his name Im just his daughter whom hes insured. I just hope they do not get that confused and senf the notifications of results etc to them instead of me. They r very old and do not fully understand all that stuff and doesent read very well so im sure they would not understand HOPEFULLY everything would be sent to me especially regarding results. Sorry for all my worrying etc thats just my personality Ive always been like this! I obsess about everything!

Well, Sheila, now things are becoming more complicated as you provide important information. All communication from an insurance company about a policy goes to the OWNER (your father), not the insured (you). So if you've been doing things you shouldn't have behind daddy's back that might expose you to HIV, and you've been exposed to HIV, daddy's gonna find out, isn't he?

You might want to consult a therapist about your "obsessions" -- they are going to interfere with your ability to live a "normal" life as an adult. Right now you're acting like an irresponsible child. (I don't say this to be rude, just telling you what you need to hear.)

Would they send you a bill before passing the swab test?
